EDDIE COCHRAN “20 FLIGHT ROCK” Single LONDON 45/HLU 8386
Side A: 20 Flight Rock [written by Ned Fairchild and Eddie Cochran]
Side B: Dark Lonely Street [written by Jerry Capehart and Eddie Cochran]
[Both tracks recorded in July 1956 with Eddie Cochran (guitar, vocals), Connie "Guybo" Smith (double bass) and Jerry Capehart – box slapping]
This 1957 release was an opportunity for Eddie Cochran fans to buy his first UK single in its original format with the A side taken from the film "The Girl Can't Help It" which amazingly did not chart despite Eddie’s superb performance. The record itself is the first pressing from 1957 with a tri-centre rather than the second pressing with a different label design and/or a rounded type centre from the early ‘60s. The pictures confirm that this is an original, comparatively rare in such fine condition and thus a very much sought after collector’s item.
There is no USA equivalent as such although there was a single released there a year later with a grossly inferior version of the A side featured on this record.
SLEEVE Company jacket is in top condition as illustrated with no tears and no writing.
RECORD Much of the original sheen has been retained and the appearance of both sides of the record in normal light is fine. There are ware marks when viewed under bright lights. The listening experience is excellent with 2 very light clicks and sibilance on the B side but these do not detract from a clear and full frequency sound. Most importantly there are no jumps on either side. The record labels are both Excellent with no unwanted writing or obvious blemishes and the triangular centre is fully intact. Although not perfect, this is an attractive VG+ copy of this scarce original UK 1957 pressing complete with its company jacket.
