Description
This vintage 2-sided Edison Diamond Disc record features the beautiful songs "Silent Night" and "O Holy Night" for the Christmas season. The artist, Frieda Hempel, is a German soprano singing with an orchestra. Silent Night is composed by Franz Xaver Gruber in 1818, and O Holy Night is composed by Adolphe Adam. Released in 1919, this record is a quarter-inch thick and 10" in diameter. Because the vertical recording method required an absolutely flat surface, the manufacture of Edison discs was quite involved. They were made up of a core of compressed wood flour with a layer of "Condensite" (a phenolic resin varnish) bonded to the surface on which the recording was engraved. This record would make a great addition to a diamond disc collection or for use in a holiday or antique decorative display.
