 -Artist / Group: Elvis Presley

-Mini bio: Born Aron Elvis Presley on Jan. 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. Died of heart failure caused by prescription drug abuse at his Graceland mansion in Memphis on Aug. 16, 1977, age 42. Moved to Memphis in 1948. First recorded for Sun in 1954. Signed to RCA Records on Nov. 22, 1955. With his good looks, a passionate bluesy voice, a great band (Bill Black, bass; Scotty Moore, guitar; D.J. Fontana, drums), a smooth vocal quartet (The Jordanaires), and managed by Tom Parker (died on Jan. 21, 1997), Presley blazed his way to the # 1 star of rock & roll-a position he has not yet relinquished. Made his nationwide TV debut on Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey's Stage Show on Jan. 28, 1956.

 -Starred in 31 feature movies (beginning with Love Me Tender in 1956). In U.S. Army from March 24, 1958 to March 5, 1960. Married Priscilla Beaulieu on May 1, 1967; divorced on Oct. 11, 1973. Priscilla pursued acting in the 1980's beginning with a role on TV's Dallas.

-Their only child, Lisa Marie (born on Feb. 2, 1968) married Michael Jackson on May 26, 1994; divorced in 1996. Elvis's last "live" performance was in Indianapolis on June 26, 1977.

-Won Grammy's Lifetime Achievment Award in 1971. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. The first rock & roll artist to be honoured by the U.S. Postal Service with his own commemorative stamp on Jan. 8, 1993.

-Note: Of interest to Elvis Presley collectors of the much rarer Canadian 45 RPM, 78 RPM, EP and LP pressings:

-From 1955 through 1959 RCA Victor Canada was still pressing Elvis Presley records on a flat black label with the lithographic (non-photographic) dog on the centre right and printed information all in silver ink. 

-In the United States, from approximately July of 1954, a coloured photographic dog and gramophone was used on a glossy black label with silver print and in most cases with the dog on top on all USA RCA Victor records.

-Elvis Presley released five important 45 / 78 RPM singles which were released only in Canada with no American equivalent:

-# 1: RCA Victor 47-6492 1956 (45 rpm) / 20-6492 (78 rpm) Blue Suede Shoes b/w I'm Counting On You

-# 2: RCA Victor 47-6689 1956 (45 rpm) / 20-6689 (78 rpm) Money Honey b/w I Got A Woman

-# 3: RCA Victor 47-7066 1957 (45 rpm) / 20-7066 (78 rpm) Mean Woman Blues b/w Have I Told You Lately That I Love You? 

-# 4: The first Elvis Presley 45 and 78 in Canada with the Photographic (coloured) Dog on top with Gramophone was (Now and Then There's) A Fool Such As I b/w I Need Your Love Tonight from March of 1959 on RCA 47-7506 (78 RPM on 20-7506). There was no American release of (Now and Then There's) A Fool Such As I on the 10" 78 RPM format, only in Canada.

-# 5:  A Big Hunk O' Love b/w My Wish Came True from July of 1959 on RCA 47-7600 or in the case of the 78 RPM pressing, 20-7600 which was the last Elvis Presley 10" 78 RPM single ever released in Canada and there was no American pressing on the 10" 78 RPM format.

-This rare Canadian commercial 78 RPM flat black label with silver print pressing of Elvis Presley's Hard Headed Woman is extremely rare. By 1958, most Canadian teenagers were buying their records on the 45 rpm 7" format leaving the 78 rpm format to the older generation.

-If you want a complete set of of all of Elvis' original 1950's 78 rpm singles, you will want a copy of this rare Canadian pressing of Hard Headed Woman.

-In the United States, Hard Headed Woman was the second to last release of an Elvis Presley single on the 10" 78 RPM format, the last would be One Night, his next release after Hard Headed Woman also from 1958.

-Not so in Canada, there would be two more 10" 78 RPM singles released in Canada after One Night which were I Need Your Love Tonight (RCA Victor 20-7506, 1959) and then Big Hunk O' Love (RCA Victor 20-7600, 1959) which was the last release of any Elvis Presley single on the 10" 78 RPM format in Canada.

Record grading:

(M) Mint: A mint record should appear to have just left the manufacturers without any handling; that is, it should appear perfect! No light scuffs or scratches, blotches or stains on labels or writing, tears or splits; nothing. Perfect. And age has nothing to do with it; the same standards for Mint apply to a rare rockabilly single from 1955 as they do to a Top 40 record from 1988! There are no sliding values for Mint. A Mint record cover should appear to have never had a record in it; no ring-wear, dog-eared corners, writing, seam-splits; nothing! Perfect! Even a new, unplayed old stock record can have factory flaws. Mint should be used sparingly and will usually attract a premium value to serious collectors. Mint means perfect and nothing else!

(SS) Still sealed: Still sealed in the factory shrink wrap.

(M-) Mint minus: A nearly perfect record. The record will show no obvious signs of wear, very light surface scuffs from normal handling are permitted but no light scratches. Original finish intact. Picture sleeves should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling.

(VG+) Very good plus: The record will show some signs that it was played or otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or light scratches. Picture sleeves may have some slight ring wear, lightly turned up corners, or a small seam split.

(VG) Very good: Many of the defects found in a VG+ record or sleeve will be more pronounced in a VG record or picture sleeve. Groove wear may be noticeable, the record may have light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound, but the foreign noises will be less prominent than the music. Picture sleeves may have quite prominent ring wear. Creases, folds, seam splits and tears will be more obvious and may appear on all three sides, and there may be writing as well.

(VG-) Very good minus: Foreign noises may be about as prominent as the music. The record still plays through without skipping. The picture sleeve will have more significant seam splits, perhaps to the point where they were taped closed, and highly obvious ring wear and heavier writing. Can serve as a filler until a better one comes along.

(G) Good: We seldom offer a good record for sale unless it is particularily rare for the following reasons: Foreign noises are louder than the recorded music and listening can be distracted by the noise. May or may not play through without skipping, but should be so noted. Picture sleeves are so badly seam split that they may not be able to contain the record within.Tears, folds, writing and ring wear may be overwheming.
