FAMILY "A Song For Me" UK REPRISE 1st PRESS w/INSERT
1970 Tri Colour Labels, MacNeill G/F, Heavyweight Vinyl

FAMILY
A Song For Me

HERE WE HAVE AN EXCELLENT, UK REPRISE (RSLP 9001) FIRST PRESSING (February 1970) OF FAMILY'S SUPERB THIRD LP, "A Song For Me" WHICH PLAYS BEAUTIFULLY THROUGHOUT. GREAT COPY!!

PRESSED ON QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL WITH THE FIRST ISSUE REPRISE TRI-COLOUR STEAMBOAT LABELS, FIRST PRESS MATRIX: RSLP 9001 A-2 and RSLP 9001 B-2, STAMPERS: S/1 and W/1 AND 'KT' TAX CODE ETCHED ON BOTH RUN OFF GROOVES (this was one of the last LPs to be issued on the tri-colour Riverboat label as the design changed to the more common Tan design just a few months after these original presses)
THE LP IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL MATTE GATEFOLD SLEEVE "Printed and made by MacNeill Press Ltd., London, S.E.1" AND COMES COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL b/w PICTURE/LYRIC INSERT (very rare and very nice to still find a copy with its insert)

Twenty eight years after the fact, this might well be the best of the early Family recordings. A combination of hard rock (bordering on metal) and wistful folk-rock (it sounds as if Chapman and Whitney were listening to a lot of Incredible String Band), A Song for Me veers toward early progressive rock, but isn't as nakedly indulgent as some early prog-rock recordings (e.g., they didn't try to sound like a jazz band, they wanted to sound like a rock band screwing around with jazz). Perhaps their most experimental record, it seems as though the credo in making this disc was that anything went. And on tracks like "Drowned in Wine," it works quite well. Again, Chapman offers more proof of his vocal greatness, and again the record sells large quantities in England and nearly nothing in America

Track Listing:
Side 1: DROWNED IN WINE / SOME POOR SOUL / LOVE IS A SLEEPER / STOP FOR THE TRAFFIC - THROUGH THE HEART OF ME / WHEELS
Side 2: SONG FOR SINKING LOVERS / HEY - LET IT ROCK / THE CAT AND THE RAT / 93's OK J / A SONG FOR ME

LABELS: The labels are CLEAN and BRIGHT with NO marks/unwanted writing but they do display moderate spindle traces only really evident when angled under a bright light. The album has been well played but also very well cared for
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces have their original DEEP, LIKE NEW, GLOSSY SHEEN!!! The surface have a couple (literally) of superficial light marks but these have NO major audio consequence WHATSOEVER
VINYL Audio: The audio is absolutely OUTSTANDING!! - CRYSTAL CLEAR, VERY STRONG, RICH and VIBRANT. There are NO scratches, NO sticks, NO jumps, barely any clicks/pops or surface noise (hardly ANY). A SUPERB playing copy of this much sought after original 1970 first pressing. The album plays BEAUTIFULLY THROUGHOUT with GREAT clarity and NO discernible distortion or groove-wear. Must be graded EXCELLENT to (+) for audio and NOT over-graded in ANY way as I use STRICT RECORD COLLECTOR grading standards (please refer to my feedback and 'about me' page)
SLEEVE: The original MATTE gatefold sleeve is in VERY GOOD++ condition. It is GOOD and SOLID with NO marks or damage. It does however, display some rubbing to the edges, made all the more prominent by the unlaminated black nature of the sleeve and there are a couple of light creases. Overall, still a VERY FINE example of this easily worn sleeve
INSERT: The original, rare and hard to find lyric insert is CLEAN and UNMARKED with only light handling wear and one (extremely) tiny little tear near the top corner (see pics)
