Label/Format: Polydor – original matt finished with the text actually engraved into the labels. Being black only, this is only really readable with angled viewing. The same format was used on their debut album too, which was silver. (Please see my label picture).

Label Conditions: Both look fantastic with only a tiny few, very light and small spindle marks, these show little. It will again be very obvious to any winning bidder that this amazing record has hardly ever been played.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

So What is Krautrock and its Rarity?: ‘Krautrock’ was an affectionate term given to a new wave of young German bands in the late 60s and early 70s. Before the emergence of these pioneering experimental rock and electronic artists, the German music scene was a real mess of sugary pop music. Out of this fog of a musical mire, a very new sound emerged as radical and as daring as anything ever heard. Whereas in the UK, rock music was very much blues or psych-based, but these young long-haired, pioneering German musicians played music that was very different. They opened new musical horizons and boundaries into the use of sound as entertainment. Several were classically trained musicians (Can) – some could barely play an instrument as all (Kluster). Far too weird and experimental for most, many were into avant garde territory, but this German underground scene was admired by many and loved by a small number of record buyers of the time. The sounds they created were often challenging and difficult, but unique and were highly influential for the development of music. Some used conventional instruments, some delved into electronics and some used unconventional devices to form sound. A few became successful even outside Germany with the odd hit single or two (Kraftwerk and Can), but some did not compromise and never sort commercial success (Faust, Neu). Although there were others, the best-known of the early experimental Krautrock bands were: Kraftwerk, Can, Faust, Amon Duul I and II, Neu, Popul Vuh, Guru Guru, Kluster and Tangerine Dream. All are worth checking out – they made some of the most groundbreaking music in rock and their importance is beyond any dispute. In terms of rarity, these early albums are never easy to find especially in top conditions, they sold in relatively small numbers and are seldom seen or offered.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Faust’s second and last album for Polydor before signing to Virgin. Whereas their first album was issued with everything clear – this time, everthing is black – including the labels. So Far is classic experimental Krautrock from these German pioneers of the genre. Very experimental and uncompromising at times but very slightly less challenging than their debut. Along with Can, Faust made great music, and unlike most of the band’s who loved to experiment with sound, Faust never sold out to commercialism - they remained cutting edge, even slightly weird - far too strange and dense for many listeners who refused to even try. Like all fine music of this type it takes time and perseverance, when their music really clicks in, its truly wonderful. Incredible rock music with use of electronics and at times sounding like the other great sound pioneer Frank Zappa. So Far was recorded at Wümme in March 1972 and was produced by Uwe Nettelbeck. This copy on offer includes the nine full sized cards and the lyric sheet making 10 altogether. The black wallat sleeve is also here. Each of the other cards is named after the tracks included on the album. The record comes in its black polylined inner and that very delicate soft paper black unlaminated matt cover. The whole package is in super shape, the only blemish is the over-protective original owner put clear tape on the opening edge for long-term protection, thus the entance edge is very sharp and unworn. The tape over the years dried out and peeled off, it left a residue line on the each side. As the cover is unlaminated, it cannot be removed of course. So a darkened strip is seen on the opening edge only. A mild blemish on what is a lovely fragile sleeve. The black inner sleeve is almost as new and the record is practically the same and sounds fantastic. This scarce UK example will prove incredibly hard to find better and challenging enough to find at all.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High.

Cover Grade and Format: NOT taking into account the fine residue line on the opening edge, I happily grade this cover as EX+. You the collector decide how much this residue mark degrades. A single matt finished format. Printed and made in England.

Cover Front: I have mentioned the residue mark on the right edge. The bottom left corner has tip crease or mild dink. There are a faint few light surface marks but no creasing other than the aforementioned corner. Clean, fresh and will not prove too easy to find better, this has no ringwear.

Cover Back: Pretty much identical with the small corner crease being less apparent.

Top Edge: Unworn.

Bottom Edge: Unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear or feathering. Record enters on this edge. I have mentioned the tape residue line and this will be the last time. If this is an issue, please do not bid.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed and square with no wear at all. This is a plain black spine with no text.

Corners: Smallish crease near the bottom left but that’s about it, all others retain superb shape.

Cover Summary: A strong example of this simplistic but still fragile 70’s cover, even though it has the mild residue blemishes, it’s one that will still prove difficult to find much better. This minimilist item should please many collectors.

The Inner: Mint(-) and quite honestly, this could pass as new, beware of substitutions. This inner is matt finished and polylined and is heavily made being twice the weight of some similar inners. Barely any traces of wear or creasing and the window remains crisp and very sharp. All edges unworn with no splits. This robust but ultimately damage-prone inner will prove near impossible to find better.

The Cards Wallet Sleeve: Mint(-) and quite honestly, this could almost pass as new as well. This inner is matt finished and unlined. Barely any traces of wear, odd tiny surface crease and no splits.

The Lyric Insert: This was printed in Germany as I guess all were. This is minimum of EX+ with just the slightest traces of handling and odd tiny semi-surface creases. NO hard creases at all, all edges sharp and crisp.

The Song Cards: All nine are in the same superb EX++ condition and can be said to be the same as the Lyric Insert above.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: A superb, practically Mint(-) record. The only marks of note are on the run-out, dead wax area on side two. Likely residue marks from the label in manufacture, no effect on sound of course. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. The heaviest pressing of this album I have had so far. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence – these more challenging Krautrock albums could go either way – some played into submission by fanatical lovers of the genre or simply bought out of curiosity, played once or twice and filed away. This copy is clearly the latter and this record plays as good as it looks. Visually a super record that should please practically all collectors.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This masterclass in avant prog plays up to its high visual grading nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Practically devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly challenging album. Brilliantly produced with real high fidelity sound values, this is a masterclass of creativity and has not dated at all. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, still a favourite all these years. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
