Label/Format: CBS – very deep orange colour, later copies were much paler (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and fresh with only very light and faint spindle marks.

Cat Number: S 69011.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. This is above average weight and the heaviest pressing of this title I have offered thus far.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: The earlier copies are much scarcer than later ones. This is a much heavier pressing and has the original cover format with a single thickness front and with inside entrance for the record [e.g. via the centrefold near the spine hinge]. Later ones has conventional side entrance and were much thinner pressed with paler labels.

Original Year of Release: 1971.

Musicians: All the early members are featured on this superb set including (of course) the legendary Peter Green.

Brief Info: All the early classic singles are featured on this brilliant album and a number of these do not feature on the original studio albums. A popular and special compilation, finding the early-pressed examples so lightly played is difficult. Nothing beats an early heavy pressed copy and with a very fine centre-loading cover, this will take some beating. The sound is lovely with only a little very gentle surface sound noted on the very quietest of passages, few avoid this, but most plays beautiful and these early blues-based Fleetwood Mac classics are as nature intended them. No digital remastering necessary.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: heavy record inside an unprotected gatefold cover with a single thickness front. Put on top central inside storage, few survive unsplit, torn or tatty, this are hard to find without significant rubbing or ringwear.

Cover Grade and Format: EX, format as outlined above. Printed and made in England by Shorewood and with the ‘Patents pending’ text.

Cover Front: The front is very deeply coloured and lacks the usual rubbing seen on many. Any present is faint and minor and the lack of creasing is very unusual. A very attractive example that will prove hard to find too much better.

Cover Back: This has dulled around the record’s rim but shows little ink disturbance, so only the mildest form of ringwear and few will avoid this at the very least. The thicker the record, the more likely, the few will outweigh this copy. A few light and faint surface marks but barely any creasing at all and again rich deep colour retained. The registration on the white seen on the logo is a little out-of-register.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Barely anything to fault and even the central entrance area is undamaged or split. Just very faint rub traces near the bottom of the right face, this being somewhat critical.

Top Edges: The fragile front is very crisp and unthickened. The back has only very light, patchy traces of rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Pretty much the same again, ultra light thickening traces to the front, being the resting edge, hardly a surprise, the only one being how minor.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both in superb condition, the front is again very sharp with no burring, the closed back has only minor traces of small compression but unrubbed.

Spine and Text: The bottom edge fold has lightly rubbed. Incredibly thin and fragile, this has to take the strain to support this heavier back with record and few survive intact and with fine looks. Solid, straight, quite erect but can flatten with pressure (as most will). Folded square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. The text all there and unworn but printed slightly out-of-register, hence it looks blurred to the eye.

Corners: Mainly light tip rubs, a couple more light+. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: An attractive all-round example of this very wear-prone and delicate 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This splendid one should please many collectors.

The Inner: The CBS ‘Sounds of 70s’ promotional unlined inner is included in very fine condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++, only downgraded from Mint(-) for one light surface mark on side two that has NO sound at all. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy only lightly played on all the evidence. This was a popular record for those who bought it and so many of the early ones are trashed and unlistenable. Chalk and cheese, this looks really lovely and sounds great too. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely record plays mostly up to its high visual grading with little to fault. Indeed most plays even above, but just a little very gentle surface sound was just noticeable on the impossibly quiet ‘Oh Well’, this being fairly critical and on very revealing equipment too. With moments of near silence, this is a very difficult song to say the least and few examples on early-pressed records will play it anything like silent. I do not wish to overstate this, because this record mostly plays superbly and it gave a very enjoyable account of itself. If clinical silence is non-negotiable, well the digital format will offer that. But if you want to hear these classics songs as Peter Green et al. wanted them to be heard, well this just the job supremely well with just about enough to remind you are listening to a nearly 40-year-old vinyl record. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound. This has real punch and clarity, the basslines are exceptional and precise, the early pressings have the extra edge for details. No noteworthy pops or clicks were noted and this is generally a clean pressing for a fairly demanding album. Most will know ‘Oh Well’ with its twangy basslines and very quiet music this sets out the benchmark. Few copies will outperform this wonderful thick pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played carefully and has been clearly well stored and lightly handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. The one fine mark has no sound. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
