Label Conditions: Both in superb conditions: incredibly clean, fresh and highly attractive with only a tiny few very fine and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area. I have seldom seen a pair of Blue Horizon labels look a great deal better.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A very good average weight for this early-pressed Blue Horizon record.

Rarity: SCARCE: and never easy to find this clean. Guess I have been lucky, this is now my third top quality stereo copy of this in the last few months.

Brief Info: The second album by ‘Peter Green’s’ Fleetwood Mac – an era when the band played real blues on arguably the most famous label of the genre, Blue Horizon. Pure class and another very early stereo copy that does it nigh-on maximum justice. I had never found this an easy one to find in suitable conditions to offer, finding three stereos in a relatively short time, almost a freak. For some reason, it’s usually found less than carefully played and on goodness knows what. It was justifiably popular, hence most that surface are substantially used and that lovely sound ruined. This very solidly-pressed copy is in stunning super-clean condition for looks and sound, it also has a very attractive, very little-worn cover. So for fans of this evergreen popular band, and Blue Horizon collectors, this is a fantastic opportunity not to be missed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better. A gatefold format with the front and back laminated, it retains it’s large stereo sticker on the back. The inside is matt and smooth, it has four external flipbacks on the top and bottom edges. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day. Also includes the original polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain shiny, fresh and clear laminate with minimal traces of any dulling, even viewed under angled light. Only the merest hint of rim impression seen on the back with utmost scrutiny. It has avoided any lifting bar one minute tiny blister on the front bottom left corner area, but look hard to even see it. A little corner tip creasing and only a very few light edge types that again have minimal visibility or visual impact. The edges remain crisp and neat and there are no impressions or scuffs. The huge stereo sticker is very neat and crisp andn clearly never picked at or removed. It has gone very slightly transparent over time, but again only very lightly so. For a cover dated way back to 1968, this is a very impressive example that has aged little, the graphic retains rich vibrant colour as I hope my pictures show.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little of anything really to fault inside, this again looks very fresh and clean. All four flipbacks are solid and crisp with neat ends with very little hint of pulling to the ends. So often these inside flipback ends become sticky as the laminate shrinks back, resulting in large tears which this one has almost totally avoided. A little fine laminate creasing is practically the norm, but here, amongst the very least I have seen.

Top Edges: Both nigh-on perfectly straight with the laminate complete and ultra smooth to the fingertip.

Bottom Edges: Both near perfect again, for storage edges, this quite unusual.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both clean, very sharp with barely any thickening or burring, even viewed more critically end-on. The record enters on the back edge and both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. The narrow exposed strips on the laminate end clean and barely worn with barely any hint of discolouration.

Spine and Text: A lovely spine overall with just a natural central crease-fold simply there from opening that all seem to have. Solid, mainly straight with minimal compression and folded square. So all edges meet up very closely together and parallel. This is one that will always form a central crease from opening, and many will shed the laminate which this has avoided, maybe a trace near the very corner tips? All text is fully present and unworn with just a little sinkage into the natural recess. This one of the better spines I have seen on this cover and most the likely with the most laminate that is almost fully intact.

Corners: Any tip rubbing small and light as are most of any small tip creases. Very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic late 1960’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. This generally fresh and clean original cover should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a heavy-duty plain white polylined inner that is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. Two crisp and neat window circles and very clear lining. Some fairly light ageing with some darkening of the seam edges and less to the paper. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a really lovely visual copy that is very clean with strong shine, intense black and very solidly pressed on high quality vinyl. We all know the perils these old blues classics potentially faced. This has some quiet songs and so often they are ruined by heavy usage that inflicts noise and groove wear which this copy has avoided. Any surface marks very few, fine and faint as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light. Visually an impressive record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage blues classic plays up to, and most all even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault at all. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A very fine CBS pressing for Blue Horizon, this specialist blues label seldom fails to please. Any surface sounds hardly even registered and nothing spoilt my play-grade experience. Few available copies will match or outperform this very early stereo example I feel sure, this is an exceptional example. Clearly CBS thought most purchases would be in mono and did not initially make a dedicated stereo cover, so these are more elusive in the two-channel mode. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended to all fans of real Fleetwood Mac blues.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
