Bidders on this album should note the cover controversy surrounding this album – and also note that some record prices and guides will not tell you the full and complete (or even accurate) history of the album’s cover artwork.

The album was ORIGINALLY released with an image of an open illuminated manuscript with gothic script on its open pages (not, repeat: NOT with the color photo of the group as some record guides claim) ; ostensibly, the open book was supposed to symbolize Torah (The Old Testament), since both the songwriting team of Bacharach/David and Bob Dylan were of Jewish ancestry;   although nothing shown on the open book itself even remotely suggested that the shown manuscript was actually Torah. (This was the first version of the cover)

At the time, the cover design had struck some pious and devout believers as profanation of the sacred text in the hands of the overly commercial popular culture (mind you, the year was 1965, not 2010), so, to alleviate their concerns, the next, revised edition of the cover featured a – gasp! – plain, brown (actually, yellow) wrapper covering ONLY the “offensive” mid-section of the cover showing a book. The top and bottom margins of the front cover were left to dangle uncovered. The confused buyers not familiar with the photo on the cover underneath the wrapper could have been excused for getting some very, very wrong ideas about what lies underneath this “fig leaf” (we refer to this version as: first-and-a-half version, as it was essentially the same as the first, only with the yellow ribbon added to the cover).

Alas, this was not sufficient to placate the religious critics either, and so the next version of the cover featured a completely blanked-out open pages of the illuminated manuscript, which were then replaced with a bland, highly stylized song listing: Bacharach/David`s on the left side, Dylan`s on the right. The rest of the cover was left unchanged (this is the second version of the cover)

Still no good. The cover was still deemed too sacrilegious. Finally, people at Phillips records lost their patience, threw out all existing covers altogether and replaced them with the one showing a color photo of the band – THIS IS THE VERSION WE HAVE HERE (this is the third – and final – version of the cover WHICH IS BY FAR THE RAREST OF THE THREE!!!). Unfortunately, by the time the album had its final plastic surgery, it had died a quiet and unremarkable death on the charts, begetting no charting hits or major Four Seasons standards, and The Seasons apparently decided to move on their next project.   The final batch of the album covers (with the color photo of the band) was released in a minuscule press run and is MASSIVELY rarer than the two earlier versions, leading the Four Seasons experts to incorrectly assume that this, final, version precedes the other two. It does not.

So there you have it, folks: the full and the unabridged history of The Four Seasons painful head-on collision with the religious controversy. But whine they did not: Big Boys don’t Cry J.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-        The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters)

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in faded thin red marker, about 1/8 x 2 inches in size)

-        Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the upper seam

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No ring wear

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
