ALBUM TITLE: ZAPPA IN NEW YORK

1978 UK LP - TRANSLUCENT RED VINYL, (POSSIBLY A PYE CONTRACT PRESSING) - PUNKY'S WHIPS IS LISTED ON THE COVER BUT NOT ON THE RECORD OR LABEL - BOTH RECORDS ARE TRANSLUCENT RED WHEN HELD TO THE LIGHT, BOTH RECORDS APPEAR BLACK UNDER NORMAL LIGHT (see pictures).

Notes: This translucent red vinyl issue of 'Zappa In New York' appears to be undocumented in the major price guides.  Records on DiscReet (and other WEA labels) were not pressed on translucent red vinyl, whereas records pressed by Pye from this era were pressed on translucent red vinyl.   This anomaly suggests that this is very likely to be a contract pressing.  Contract pressings are records which are pressed by other pressing plants in order to fulfil high demand for popular titles.  It is unlikely that there was a high demand for this record, however, the following theory is plausible explaining why this could be a contract pressing.  'Zappa In New York' was originally intended for release including a track entitled 'Punky's Whips'.  'Punky's Whips' was quickly withdrawn (there is a scarce UK version with the Punky's Whips track on the record) and a corrected version was soon available.  It is therefore likely that the record company would have wanted a corrected reissue of the record, without Punky's Whips, in the stores as quickly as possible.  It is very likely that the regular pressing plants used were busy preparing other records and that the record company had to use another pressing plant (in this scenario it is assumed that they used Pye).  These records have every characteristic of a Pye pressing from this era - the label ridges are close to the edge of the label and the vinyl is a translucent red when held to the light.  Very few translucent red vinyl versions exist, and the majority of corrected issues that I have seen are black vinyl versions (I personally have only seen two copies of the translucent red version).  I have compared this issue with other 'corrected' issues of 'Zappa In New York' (without 'Punky's Whips') and these have different label ridges and are pressed with black vinyl.  N.B. The vinyl colour is a deeper red than portrayed in the pictures.
