FRANK ZAPPA - Lumpy Gravy ORIG Verve PROMO LP V-8741 (US, Mono, 1968)

Happy to present this super-rare yellow label DJ only PROMO copy of Zappa’s early solo effort recorded in February 1967 but not released until some time later.

The thick card pasted gatefold US sleeve is in a satisfying condition for a US style sleeve with the following imperfections away from Mint: a 3-inch split to one of the top edges; a bumped and creased bottom left corner; moderate rubbing to the top and bottom edges, slight crease to the top right corner; light ring impression to the rear; moderate wear to the corners - more pronounced on the spine side and light (and I mean light) rubbing to both front and rear, although nowhere near as heavy as a lot of US sleeves of this vintage. Other than that, it’s actually very strong with a lovely wide spine (all text visible bar the cat. no. at the bottom) NO real creasing to either the front or the rear, very strong opening edges with no feathering whatsoever, bright and unfaded colour thru’out, a very solid inner gate with just a touch of rubbing and NO tears, writing or stickers. All in all graded VG (Very Good) due to the split but generally feels more satisfying than that.

The bright yellow not for sale labels are in fantastic condition and show only one spindle trail between the two sides. NO writing, residue, dirt or tears. A lovely pair of these vintage promo labels.

The medium weight vinyl lies totally flat and is a great example of this rare edition. It looks lovely with near to maximum shine, and is super clean with only one long hairline per side (faint, not obvious) and 2 or 3 really fine scuffs. THIS HAS BEEN EXAMINED CLOSELY UNDER STRONG ELECTRIC LIGHT AND ALSO IN STRONG DAYLIGHT (as one sometimes shows up things that the other doesn’t!). Looking even further in detail, there is the tiniest of scratches (¼ inch no more) to Side 2. But NO UGLY MARKS AND STILL A VERY FRESH AND PLEASING LOOKING DISC!! Visually grades EX- (Excellent Minus) if not full EX. IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and plays superb in the main - particularly for an LP featuring such quiet and spoken word interludes. Run-ins on both sides are near silent. There is ultra (and I mean hardly any) light surface static during the quiet and spoken passages, sometimes manifesting into light, soft clicks. The only noteworthy audio fault comes from the aforementioned tiny scratch which causes around 10 light clicks halfway thru’ Side 2. Other than this there is NO snap, loud pops, hiss, distortion or loss of clarity: the audio holds up strong on this important promotional disc. I’ve gotta say near Excellent, but only because of the brief clicks. Otherwise full EX.

Presented in a fresh inner sleeve, this yellow label version of Lumpy Gravy hardly ever shows, so as Janis said ‘Get it while you can’. No reserve!
