  Description FRED NEIL "OTHER SIDE OF THIS LIFE" Capitol Records ST-657. Plain White Cover: MINT, Vinyl: EXCELLENT PLUS, Labels: EXCELLENT PLUS! ORIGINAL FIRST PRESSING 1971 STEREO 33 1/3 RPM 12-INCH LP RECORD/SCARCE ACETATE TEST PRESSING/HAND WRITTEN TITLE INFORMATION ON A PRINTED WHITE CAPITOL RECORDS LABEL! FRED NEIL was the KING of GREENWICH VILLAGE FOLK SINGERS!  This is a GENUINE ORIGINAL ACETATE.  Acetate pressings are usually cut in the studio on a lathe.  It is likely that ONLY about 25-100 of these were ever made.  They are made so that the musicians, engineers, producer, record company executives and other interested parties can hear the record as soon as it is finished [in this case].  The date on the label is probably right about when the sessions and mastering were finished; but indicates this was made several months BEFORE the record was actually released in 1971.  Acetates are sometimes made while a session is in progress, to check the progress, before the song is finished.   They are NOT manufactured like a regular record.  They look and feel different than a regular record.  They have a color that has a purple-ish hue to it.  It has a duller finish than a manufactured record.  This disc weighs about three times as much as a regular record.  When you hit the edge of the record with a fingernail [like you were flicking away a cigarette] there is a metallic ping sound, that is much different than when you take the same action with a standard record.  I worked in a recording studio in 1963 and we used to cut acetates in the studio.  I have seen at about 200 acetates since that time.  I feel quite comfortable identifying an acetate when I see one.  This is, IN FACT, an EXTREMELY RARE acetate pressing of this album!     
      FRED NEIL was there at the beginning of the early Sixties FOLK MUSIC REVIVAL which produced a whole generation of talented songwriters and ultimately the bands that made FOLK-ROCK and SIXTIES ROCK so rich and exciting! Everybody from BOB DYLAN to DAVE VAN RONK held NEIL in high esteem. He had already been through MEMPHIS where he hung around SUN STUDIOS with ELVIS and SAM PHILLIPS [and cut a RARE Rockabilly 45!] and NASHVILLE where he wrote "CANDY MAN" for ROY ORBISON! FRED was busting with talent. He had a voice that stopped you in your tracks, a rich and sonorous baritone. He had the musical chops. And, he could write a sensitive introspective song that would make you weep. His fame came from his song "Everybody's Talking". But, their is also a very rich body of work behind the late FRED NEIL! This record is 1 of 11 albums by FRED NEIL in my current auctions! QUINTESSENTIAL FOLK MUSIC!
      This is a SCARCE ACETATE TEST PRESSING of the 1971 release that was, unfortunately, the final album from the great FRED NEIL! ONLY A HANDFUL OF THESE WERE EVER MADE! The title information is handwritten on the white label. This pressing is hand dated "11-17-70"! The year before the record was released! Half of this LP was recorded at a club gig at The Elephant in Woodstock, NY. The other side are the final studio recordings where he is accompanied by GRAHAM PARSONS [GRAM PARSONS of THE BYRDS and FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS], VINCE MARTIN and Jazz great LES McCANN! I listened to this TEST PRESSING LP and found that it sounds to me like the same songs and versions that appear on the commercial version released the next year. It has the same song line-up: SIDE ONE "Other Side Of This Life", "Roll On Rosie", "The Dolphins", "That's The Bag I'm In', "Sweet Cocaine", "Everybody's Talkin'". SIDE TWO: Come Back Baby", "Badi-Da", "Prettiest Train", "Ya Don't Miss Your Water", "Felicity". I have to say how impressed I was with the aural sound on this TEST PRESSING! WOW! It was bright, sharp, clear, with a full dynamic range. I didn't A/B it, but it sounded better than my First Pressing LP. This one SOUNDS GREAT! There is such a paucity of FRED NEIL MATERIAL available that is all to be treasured. Here are live versions of FRED NEIL CLASSICS along with some real gems recorded in the studio!
      This record is in EXCELLENT PLUS condition! [the cover has NO TEARS or SPLITS. the vinyl looks great. acetates have a different look than regular vinyl. but this looks excellent with just a few surface scuffs. there is some residue from a pricing sticker one label only. this can be easily removed.] This record PLAYS EXCELLENT PLUS!
