Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive examples showing only ultra light and fine spindle marks. No wear around the hole area and this vintage pair look terrific and without any doubt, this record has hardly been played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 120 grams. Around average for it’s era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Moderately scarce: this is never an easy one to find with a clean, little-worn cover and offering top quality sound. I have so often found the pink ‘i’ pressings noisy with inherent crackle and often distortion too, especially on the classic final song. This one has none of that and plays beautifully and I am certain this has a different mix to the first issue too.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably Free’s best and most popular album, but now very difficult to find in anything like top conditions on the earlier labels. Featuring their best-known line up of: Fraser, Rodgers, Kossoff and Kirke this band had a wonderfully unique sound. Beautifully produced by themselves and John Kelly, the driving basslines are especially noteworthy. On ‘Mr Big’ and the supreme long version of ‘All Right Now’ the bass strings growl and resonate with huge impact and detail, you can actually see the speaker cloth moving. Brilliant blues-tinged rock, Free really deserve more acclaim than they ultimately get. Kossoff is a legendary guitar hero and Rogers vocals are sublime and expressive, together with that wonderful bass-rich sound they made stunning music. This Pink Rim Island record on offer does it absolute full justice and the cover is in very impressive condition, and at the risk of repeating myself, it’s another very wear prone non-laminate that suffers rubbing and ringwear so easily. The actual record looks hardly played and is better pressed than many I have heard previously. This pink rim pressing is one of my cleanest yet and offers the type of sound the more discerning listener demands. Overall, very impressive.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably undergraded as such on such an unforgiving cover. A single unlaminated format with a matt finish and made with quite thin card. Printed and made in England by MacNeill.

Cover Front: One of the least worn examples I have seen for a while. There is light rubbing around the rim shape seen under light but barely any traces of ink removal. A very faint price sticker residue mark again seen under light near the top right corner, this a faint dull mark with no pulling or ink loss. A small few ultra fine and faint edge hairlines but few other creases at all and this retains superb fresh looking colour. The band picture will be hard to find much better.

Cover Back: Practically the same again, just the faintest of rim rub traces near the left edge (but look ultra hard). Minor surface marks seen under light but the lack of deeply penetrating ringwear and significant creasing is unusual and most welcome. .

Top Edge: Very thin and fragile but little short of as made being straight and any rubbing tiny and super-faint.

Bottom Edge: Any rub traces are incredibly light and faint.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and mostly very sharp with few traces of wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid but with some some patchy compression. Any wear to the fragile text is tiny and slight with just a couple of characters slightly clipped. The ‘S’ in ‘ISLAND’ the most affected. The ends are gently tapered in manufacture.

Corners: Any tip rubs are very small indeed and these retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: Holding this famous, but fragile cover gives immediate satisfaction and a high percentage of these will fail to do so these days. This is a very fine example that should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: This one came in a plain white inner that has darkened with age. If not for that, this unlined inner would be practically like new.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): with a very strong temptation to grade full Mint, something I rarely ever contemplate. A supreme visual copy. Super clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. Any surface marks barely even register and without doubt, this record has been played very little. A cleaner, fresher and simply gorgeous looking pink rim copy of this record will seldom be found.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic record plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, clean and enjoyable sound without the usual crackle heard on so many copies. I have been very disappointed with some very clean looking copies of this album before, and when discussing with collectors and customers, they have experienced just the same problems. Island records pressings were known to be variable: some superb at best, some noisy – King Crimson’s ‘Lizard’ a real case in point with some shocking ones experienced on occasions and the same for Roxy Music’s debut. This album is often little better and finding any pressing, regardless of label format with minimal surface or pressings sounds is a real achievement. Overall the sound quality is very impressive with a wide dynamic range and very warm sound – the basslines, as stated earlier, are high in the mix and very powerful giving the band their very distinctive sound. No significant pops or clicks were noted and few copies will play much better than this especially when most buyers who bought the early copies played them heavily. I have found this album that does not tolerate heavy use or abuse too well and I have heard several copies with high frequency clipping with the treble shattered by heavy pick-ups from the distant past. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this sublime album. This copy will prove challenging difficult to find significantly better and merits high recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. Printed address labels are used for clarity as well as a sender label. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
