FREE JAZZ GOES UNDERGROUND Lp by FREE ORBIT arrangements by FRANK ST. PETER. Original German pressing on MPS - BASF label (CRA 761), from 1970. Desirable item, initially released on the MPS 14 006 ST label. Our copy is also from 1970 but with a label variation pressed during the transitional phase of the MPS distribution agreement with BASF in April 1970 (resulting in changes to catalogue numbers and label design but the sleeve remained unaltered, except for a sticker). Considered a grail by German rock / funk and jazz collectors with genre bending sound. An experimental group first created in Hamburg in 1969 by drummer - vocalist, Udo Lindenberg with trumpet player, Fred Christmann and American saxophonist, Frank St. Peter. Other studio musicians, including Peter Herbolzheimer, joined the final formation for the session in 1970. The music is a hybrid of jazz and psychedelia with that hippie ambience of the period. Herbolzheimer was already a darling of the MPS executives and Lindenberg was just perfect for a "pop" oddity as he was new on the scene and a top percussionist who could sing. He was also the funky drummer with Klaus Weiss on the Niagara Sangandongo Lp ;) Free Jazz Goes Underground should appeal to fans of early Xhol Caravan / The Motherhood and The Oimels but with a more theatrical and funky sound a la Trip Ein Pop-Oper Von Silke Schwinger and Fatty George. Groovy rock with distinctive psychedelic soul nuances, vocals sung in English and an amazing horn section. Features the killer FLYING WINDMILL with funky drums and an insane middle section with breaks - rhythmical free jazz blowing and spooky wind FX. Great for leftfield DJs. We have also recorded several other cool trax for our soundclip... NEVER FELT SO FREE contains a heavy fuzz guitar solo midway / BIG FAMILY is the funky psych jazz theme with congas and cool trombone solo by Herbolzheimer (as comped by the Boutique label) / YOU GOT ME is a soul boogaloo with rock and exotic sitar interludes / WORLD OF ILLUSION has vocal phrasings a la Mark Murphy with beatnik style spoken word rap / KEEP ON DREAMING defies categorisation with bossa breaks / hip hop beats and rocked-out fuzz finale etc etc. Composer, Frank St. Peters is the flute player you hear and there is even an unknown female singer backing the lead vocals of Lindenberg and the little known Mike Brooks. Striking eyeball design artwork on this MPS 14006 Stereo thick card laminated cover with BASF sticker (added during the transitional phase of the distribution agreement mentioned above). Rare Lp!!! Our record grading: SEALED / M- / VG++ / VG+ / VG krautrock acid jb jbs 

Vinyl is in shiny, strong VG+ condition (closer to VG++) with some hairlines and faint scuffs. Booming production sound. Light surface noises. Some soft pops / soft ticks in places (as you can hear on our soundclip). The laminated thick card sleeve is in strong VG+ condition with some ring marks and corner wear (with laminate chipping). Also a ding to bottom right corner area. A few small laminate crease lines to outer edges. Mini, circular shaped white scrape mark in the laminate, just above the middle of the bottom seam. Camera flash glare to sleeve and label photo.
