Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. Any spindle marks are very few and ultra fine, small and faint – this superb record appears hardly even played.

Brief Info: The debut album from one of the UK’s most respected rock bands. This is heavy blues-rock, with quite a few of the songs being slow tempo and dark – even sombre. All the four members were under 20 when this classic set was recorded and although highly-rated, it failed to chart in the UK and only just scraping into the top 200 in the US. With such few sales, all the pink Island pressings are elusive, even rare, and few survive in decent playing conditions with even fewer with respectable covers that are massively prone to all forms of wear. Although it has a fairly raw, not particularly polished production – a bit like Led Zeppelin I – it has immense in-built power and detail With originals so elusive with price tags to match, I am more than happy to offer superb later-pressed copies. This plays with terrific sound that is little short of perfect and has a nice neat cover. For those who want the vinyl experience – and in the great scheme of things – this is still relatively early – this is a fantastic way to get it without breaking the bank. To date, this is probably the very best pressing and audio quality I have heard.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: only marked down for the scuff on the top edge. This looks very impressive on the main areas, including the spine. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Includes the polylined black inner sleeve.

Cover Front: This cover has always been a challenge to find really nice, this front is lovely. A little fine rubbing seen on the top edge right of centre and on the odd corner tip, but little else. Any marks or creases minimal, small and faint, an over 40-year-old cover remaining fresh and clean with no sticker issues.

Cover Back: Even harder to find nice, this is even better than the front with barely any rubbing and no ring wear.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Almost as-made with barely anything to fault as seen.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and flush with a rub-scuff on the front, right of centre, only a little on the back.

Bottom Edges: Similar again minus with less rubbing, any present on these near the right corner end.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both clean with minimal thickening, the record enters on the back, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A splendid spine with little wear. Solid, straight with barely any compression, folded square, so all edges meet up flush and parallel. The surface and folds unfaded and barely worn, all text present and strong.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs with very fine to excellent shape retained, no bashes, any hint of dinking gentle and light.

Cover Summary: Overall, an impressive example that does it high justice – this a cover that does not wear well and finding one so clean is never easy. The top edge rub is the only real issue, but this has far more positives that outweigh this. One to hold and admire, they seldom are these days.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the black polylined Island inner has aged little. Some crinkle/mild creasing with all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): a superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy hardly played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks bordering on minuscule, even as seen critically under bright light. Tiny wispy traces only, they hardly get better, this record plays superbly throughout. Visually a lovely record that should please most-all fans and collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent album plays up to and even beyond it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this mid-1970s pressing I feel sure. Put into true perspective: if a first issue was found looking and sound like this, the price would go off-the-scale. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has barely been played and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove beyond difficult to find better and is unreservedly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
