This handsome and very rare gatefold LP from Electrola (WALP 1324, German pressing, red/gold semi-circle label – ED1, mono) features Wilhelm Furtwangler and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in magnificent accounts of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C Major Op. 21, recorded in the rich acoustics of the Musikvereinsaal in November 1952.
Filling out the disc is an equally potent rendition of Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 2 in C Major Op. 72 with Furtwangler here leading the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra at the Musikhochschule, Berlin, in April 1954.
Both performances are exalted examples of the art of conducting (and orchestral playing) – landmarks in the Beethoven discography.
The reverse side of the jacket carries insightful liner notes by K.O., provided in German only. The striking cover art is uncredited, alas.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the heavy jacket is VERY GOOD. There are small cuts (not tears, they do not go through) to the front panel, as well as corner wear, and mild ringwear and a small "T" written on rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and extremely attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is VERY GOOD. Although there is light surface noise throughout, in general the playback remains quite fine. There are no scratches (or even tics per se), just light surface noise, but not overly obtrusive. However, if you must have a flawless or near-MINT copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
