Label Conditions: Both immaculate, fresh and highly attractive, I am actually struggling to find a spindle mark trace at all. Certainly amongst the best pair of hatters I have ever seen on this classic prog title.

Rarity: Early pressed copies of this title are scarce especially in this type of condition. This has the vertical red spine text that was later changed (please see close-up of this detail) and also the red ‘Charisma Puts a Little Colour in Your Cheeks’ inner.

Brief Info: The band’s fourth album and third on Charisma, this one was not issued on the pink label, this is first B&C credited large hatter original. A super album it is too, and by now the band were fast gaining a cult following within the progressive market. Gabriel’s on-stage theatricals were getting more dramatic and the music was getting more complex and adventurous. Foxtrot includes the live stage favourite in the very long ‘Supper’s Ready’ which occupies most of side two and is broken into seven elements. The album kicks off with the classic ‘Watcher of the Skies’ and there is no filler material on this classic prog set. This album is beautifully packaged too with a fantastic cover and this vintage copy includes the original Charisma inner bag too. This copy looks practically as made and offers superb sound, this too for a difficult record with many quiet segments, one to please most-all Genesis fans.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): an unlaminated gatefold format that is textured front and back with matt surfaces (the inside is smooth). Like the labels, this cover has the original B&C credits and was printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. This one has the spine text in red and reading veritically (please see in part on my close-up). The original ‘Charisma puts a little colour in our cheeks’ promotional inner sleeve is also included.

Cover Front: Superb, they honestly seldom get seen a great deal better than this. Beautiful artwork and very brightly coloured with no fading or creasing. The texturing is very sharp and pronounced and has no rubbing or white speckle that friction will inflict on the majority in some way. A few fine hairlines seen near the top right corner edge, probably the only blemish on the entire cover being honest. The lack of creasing is always a bonus and this famous prog front will rarely be found better and can be enjoyed to the absolute maximum.

Cover Back: I am struggling to find fault with this incredible back at all. The lack or rubbing, speckle, ringwear and grubbiness is very seldom seen and any blemishes are beyond minuscule.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little short of as made and looking marvellous.

Top Edges: Both unworn, fresh and straight. The cover is folded slightly off-square which usually means one edge rubs, but this has been cover-protected from new and the difference that makes is immediately apparent.

Bottom Edges: A minuscule rub trace near the front right corner, that’s about it.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and mostly very sharp with little wear and both guaranteed untrimmed. Any burr traces are tiny and faint. Record entered on the back edge.

Spine and Text: A fantastic spine too with barely any traces of rubbing to the vulnerable surface and folds. Solid, quite thick, straight and uncompressed. Folded a little off-square so a drop on the front edge – that has nothing to do with wear of course, purely a minor manufacture issue. All text, in red ink, which unusually reads downwards, is perfect and unworn and there is barely any traces of wear and it has remained clean and barely aged at all. The vertical red text is important to this first issue and the fact it’s unworn is crucial for the more discerning collector, also this one has remained unfaded, a trait for which this cover offen suffers if exposed to light for any length of time.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small and faint, most on the spine top but still light, all retain excellent to near mint shape.

Cover Summary: A truly beautiful all round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult indeed to find better. Rarely seen so clean and fresh, this beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): Quite a fragile thin paper unlined promotional inner that is generally clean and brightly coloured with barely any noteworthy creases and all edges solid and intact, these never lined. Only the earliest examples of this album included this lovely Charisma inner which was always highly prone to ringwear which this has somehow avoided. The top recessed opening is neat and unburred. Very slightly darkened with age with a little tiny chipping on one edge. Overall, a very impressive example.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy that looks hardly played and this is not an easy record to find like this. Any surface traces are minuscule, even viewed under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Gabriel-era Genesis record plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault and Genesis albums are never easy on vinyl with many very quiet passages and complex structured music. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and little unwanted registered at all. The odd faint surface sound is near impossible to avoid totally as is the odd sporadic tick or two on a quiet segment. But this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. No pressing noises or crackle, few copies will match or outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Few records like this will ever play ‘silent’ throughout, the format barely allows it and pressing quality from the 70s onwards was never quite 1960s standard – in many cases anyway. But this one really excels and I can hardly imagine finding or hearing a cleaner copy. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly (if indeed at all) and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
