Label Conditions: Both immaculate and highly attractive with only ultra faint and a tiny few spindle traces to be seen on either. Certainly amongst the best pair of hatters I have ever seen on this classic prog title.

Cat Number: CAS 1058.

Weight of this Record: 127 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Brief Info: The band’s fourth album and third on Charisma, this one was not issued on the pink label. A super album it is too, and by now the band were fast gaining a cult following within the progressive market. Gabriel’s on-stage theatricals were getting more dramatic and the music was getting more complex and adventurous. Foxtrot includes the live stage favourite in the very long ‘Supper’s Ready’ which occupies most of side two and is broken into seven elements. The album kicks off with the classic ‘Watcher of the Skies’ and there is no filler material on this classic prog set. This album is beautifully packaged too with a fantastic cover and this vintage copy includes the original Charisma inner bag too. This copy looks hardly even played and is sure to please most-all Genesis fans needing this.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++ an unlaminated gatefold format that is textured front and back (the inside is smooth). Like the labels, this cover has the original B&C credits and was printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. This one has the spine text in red and reading downwards (please see in part on my close-up). The original ‘Charisma puts a little colour in our cheeks’ promotional inner sleeve is also included.

Cover Front: Superb, they honestly rarely get seen much better than this. Practically blemish-free and looking wonderful. Beautiful artwork and very brightly coloured with no fading or creasing. The texturing is very sharp and pronounced and has no rubbing or white speckle that friction will inflict on the majority in some way. I can just about see under angled light one tiny pressmark towards the bottom but this is almost nit-picking for the sake of it. Fresh, clean, close to reference standard, this front simply looks marvellous.

Cover Back: Practically the same as the front. Any record impression or rubbing is very small and faint and this being prone to both. Both the outer faces of this famous cover will be immensely difficult to find better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Near perfect, this reminds of when new.

Top Edges: The odd minor and light rub trace up to the right corners.

Bottom Edges: Quite light, patchy rubbing. Resting edges rarely remain unscathed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering, minor burr traces viewed end-on being somewhat critical, there is no trimming. Record entered on this right outside back edge.

Spine and Text: A fantastic spine too with barely any traces of rubbing to the vulnerable surface apart from the top corner. Solid, quite thick, straight, uncompressed, folded a mere fraction off-square, so right edges around a couple of millimeters off parallel – this is very slight in context for a 12 inch cover. All text, in red ink, which unusually reads downwards, is perfect and unworn and there is barely any traces of wear and it has remained clean and barely aged at all. The top text, ‘GENESIS’ is low of centre, the rest very central.

Corners: Light and small tip rubs only and are neatly defined with only little wear.

Cover Summary: A truly beautiful all round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult indeed to find much better. Rarely seen so clean and fresh, this beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner: Mint(-) and little short of full Mint. A superb example and great indication that LP has rarely been removed as this looks barely handled. Clean, fresh, barely any noteworthy creases and all edges solid and unsplit, this ws never lined. Only the earliest examples of this album included this lovely Charisma inner which was always highly prone to ringwear or which this has avoided totally. Even the top recessed opening is pristine.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++ with nothing more than a very few ultra faint and fine hairlines visible under angled light. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy that looks hardly played and this is not an easy record to find like this. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Gabriel-era Genesis record plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault and Genesis albums are never easy on vinyl with many very quiet passages and complex structured music. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and little unwanted registered at all. The odd faint surface sound is near impossible to avoid totally as is the odd sporadic tick on a quiet segment. But this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. As I have said many times before, if the odd minor sound blemish is not acceptable, stick to the clinical silence of the CD. Few records will ever play ‘silent’ throughout, the format barely allows it and pressing quality from the 70s onwards was never quite 1960s standard – in many cases anyway. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
