Label Conditions: Both immaculate: ultra clean, fresh and attractive with hardly a spindle trace to be seen. Try finding these labels better as a first issue.

Cat Number: CLASS 1.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A very good solid weight for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Much rarer as a true ‘first-cut’, first issue – second ‘cuts’ has A-2U matrixes on side one – with the large hatter label – later ones still had the small hatter labels. Also first issues had an unlaminated cover, that incredibly hard to excellent – this incredible one has little wear. This is one for Genesis and prog collectors who want the earliest issues made.

Original Year of Release: 1973.

Matrix Nos: CLASS 1 A-1U & CLASS 1 B-1U (this a ‘first cut’, ‘first’ issue). As stated above, second cut ‘first’ issues had ‘A-2U’ matrixes on side one. First cut examples were only very briefly available and not easily found.

Brief Info: The first live Genesis album and it was to date their most successful. Featuring five of their lengthier songs from previous albums, it did well to encapture the essence of the early Genesis sound. It paved the way for the highly successful ‘Selling England by the Pound’ that really got this wonderful prog band noticed. This is a much rarer genuine first-cut ‘first’ format pressing, the difference being the -1U on side one matrixes instead of a -2U. Rather more unusually, first issues had a totally unlaminated matt finished E. J. Day cover, later ones were laminated and made by James Upton. These are immensely difficult to find nice – and this is very clean, the record also plays very well indeed with any blemishes few and light. This too on a typically challenging Genesis album with several quietier passages.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated matt finished format with smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Group with original B&C credits.

Cover Front & Back: Clean, still fresh looking with very little rubbing or blemishes that few early unlaminated examples ever seem to avoid. Any of the very few surface creases very light and faint as edge hairline types or minor tip ones. The lack of ring wear a major positive and this retains deep rich colour that appears to have no tip-ins or enhancements.

Top Edge: Straight and practically unworn.

Bottom Edge: The storage edge has light to near moderate patchy rubbing that few will ever totally avoid.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with with wear, any thickening or burring light as seen viewed more critically end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, mainly straight with any compression light. All text is perfect and unworn, centred a fraction low on quite a narrow depth. Even the folds have little wear.

Corners: Light tip rubs and a little gentle tip creasing to a couple or three. Very fine shape is largely retained.

Cover Summary: Quite a delicate and somewhat wear-prone dark cover. The early non-laminates with thicker records inside for longer seldom age well, with all considered, this is a very clean and attractive example.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): a plain white solid unlined inner that has darkened with age but has avoided any noteworthy creasing. Either the original owner or the retailer put the album name, price (£1.99), name and date or purchase (31/7/73) on the top corner in smallish ink. One small central neat edge split on the bottom I carefully repaired to stop it potentially widening in the future, you would hardly even notice. All other edges unsplit and sound.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) / EXCELLENT(++): with very few marks at all, especially on side two that is little short of immaculate. A small mark on the run-in on side one has no sound, this worthy of mention as this is one of the very few records I have heard where their is recorded sound on both run-ins. Audience applause opens the album as soon as the stylus makes contact. Both labels almost as new too and I am certain this record has hardly been played and it looks and sounds impressive.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic early live Genesis album plays up to, and most even above it’s high visual grading with to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds registered little and only a few very brief ultra faint ticks were noted on a very quiet passage – almost ear-to-speaker quiet. A small few sporadic ticks or surface trace is nigh-on impossible to avoid on a record like this, a live set with some very quiet passages, but this will never prove easy to find like this or better. This record is barely even run-in vinyl terms and the pressing quality even surprised me – not all Charisma were this clean and often they could be constantly crackly or even have inherent pressing noises. No such worries with this ultimate first issue, just the odd very polite reminder you a listening to a 40-year-old record and not a squeaky clean digital format. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Very little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, I can personally live with the odd gentle reminder of what I am actually listening to – vinyl is a contact format, that will mean the occasional blemish – that a pure fact-of-life. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better, especially for a prized and rarer A-1U/B-1U pressing with first mothers and early stampers. It can be strongly recommended unless absolute silence is mandatory – and good luck with that on this particular title.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
