GENTLE GIANT - ACQUIRING THE TASTE
Excellent copy of this extremely rare and collectable British progressive rock classic.
'Small' Vertigo swirl on 'label' side. Original inner swirl bag, but with polythene missing.
The bad news: the record has some sight marks, one of which looks nasty. The good news: these do not affect listening. Happily, the pressing standards 42 years ago were so good, the surface could be marked without affecting the sound quality.
But, if you want a copy that is visually perfect, this may not be for you.
Some fine details:
Side 1 has five sight marks - these look like scratches, but affect only the visual integrity of the record. I am currently playing it with a Garard 401 turntable, fitted with a Linn Basik tone arm and Goldring cartridge. I have the counterweight set to 2 grams, and there is no surface noise at all. On a lighter weight - say 1 or 1.5 grams, there may be light surface noise between tracks.
Side 2 has one clearly visible sight mark, and several very faint 'spider' marks. It, too, plays without surface noise with the tone arm set to 2 grams.
The sleeve is in excellent condition. There is very minor shelf wear to the edges of the sleeve, as you would expect for a record made 42 years ago. There is no information on the spine, and the record is housed on the left side of the gatefold, so that if you open the gatefold and hold it up vertically, the record loads from the 'top' of the sleeve.
The inner bag is yellowed with age around the edges, has a tear to one seam, and the polythene inner is missing.
All in all, despite some cosmetic limitations, this is a lovely copy of a fine British progressive rock classic.
