Having scored four consecutive Top Ten albums in the previous two years, Grand Funk Railroad may not have seemed to casual observers like a band who needed to rise phoenix-like from the ashes, but the title of the band's seventh album referred to its re-emergence after a litigious split from manager/producer Terry Knight.
Now, they were producing themselves, and they added organist Craig Frost, credited here as a sideman, though he went on to join the band formally.
The biggest change, however, was a musical maturity.
After releasing five studio albums in a little over two years, Grand Funk waited more than a year before releasing Phoenix, and in that time they managed to come up with more variety than they had displayed before. "Someone," for example, was a surprisingly gentle ballad, and "Rain Keeps Fallin'" was stronger melodically than most of songwriter Mark Farner's previous efforts.
Unlike earlier albums, Phoenix didn't seem like one rudimentary rocker after another, which made it Grand Funk's most listenable album so far. And that's not to say it didn't rock, as the leadoff instrumental, "Flight of the Phoenix," and "Rock 'n Roll Soul" clearly demonstrate
Track Listing:
Side 1: Flight Of The Phoenix / Trying To Get Away / Someone / She Got To Move Me / Rain Keeps Fallin'
Side 2: I Just Gotta Know / So You Won't Have To Die / Freedom Is For Children / Gotta Find Me A Better Day / Rock 'n Roll Soul
LABELS: The labels are clean and unmarked with less than a handful of light spindle traces - this copy has seen little play - NEAR MINT
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces retain their original deep, like-new, glossy sheen and are practically unmarked - NEAR MINT
VINYL Audio: Sensational sound reproduction throughout - crystal clear, clean, crisp, sharp and vibrant sound - incredibly strong with a deep and heavy bass response and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no loud clicks or pops and just a light touch of surface noise between some (not all) of the tracks. The sound quality is simply sensational throughout and the whole LP plays to an extremely high standard with all frequencies bright and clear with no discernible groove-wear or distortion (it's seen little play). Critically graded NEAR MINT for audio (it's practically flawless) this is a great copy
SLEEVE: The outer laminated G&L gatefold sleeve is also in beautiful condition. The laminated surfaces are clean and unmarked with a deep, glass-like gloss and the edges and spine are crisp and square with practically no wear to speak of - a wonderful example - EXCELLENT+
