GRANT GREEN – ‘Am I Blue’ ORIG Blue Note LP / BLP 4139 (US, Mono, 1963)

Johnny Coles, Joe Henderson, John Patton and Ben Dixon join Green on this 1963 session, a great LP for the Summer and presented here in its original Monaural press with the vinyl in a very nice condition.
The single format, stiff, thick, non-laminated (but front-glossy)US-style sleeve features the ’43 West 61st Street, New York 23’ address to the lower rear. It’s a solid, structurally sound example – no major damage. It shows the following imperfections (please see photos): the previous owner’s name written in amongst Joe Goldberg’s sleeve notes; a ‘No.1’ written between the track titles; 2 copyright stamps; some storage rubs both front and rear; couple of spot stains to the rear right margin; slight corner tip rubs and moderate edge rubbing. However, NO splits, no creases throughout, no bends, tears or rips – still lies flat without ripples or moisture damage. Without the writing, probably worthy of an EX- (or VG+ at least) but I’ll say VG (Very Good) but understand that I’m outlining every imperfection away from mint here and it’s still pretty strong and pleasing!
The labels are unusual in that Side 1 is deep groove yet Side 2 isn’t. I believe this is how this LP was originally released. They maintain near to full whiteness without writing, stickers, scrapes or residue. They have the ‘New York USA’ text. A lovely pair of these vintage labels with only very light spindle evidence too.
The vinyl is super and grades a strong EX (Excellent) if not +. It has ‘VAN GELDER’ machine stamped into the run-offs both sides and a ‘P’ or ‘ear’ symbol etched also. There are no marks at all to Side 1 and just 1 light scuff line to Side 2 along with a less visible patch of small scuffing. That’s about it for any visual signs of use. It maintains a lovely shine and has NO scratches, no hairlines and no embedded dirt. IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and for such a quiet session, this copy will surely delight. I picked up no snap, nasty crackle, no pops or repetitive clicks, no distortion or loss of clarity/ lack of definition. Just the occasional touch of surface static and the odd light tick (very few and far between). A superb clean listen which at least matches the visual grade!
Supplied in its original advertising inner (correct and not dated) but split nearly fully down one side. Overall a tremendous looking and sounding copy of this Green classic.
