Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: WS 1790.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 116 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Rare: a commercial non-starter and UK orange label copies are incredibly hard to find. Not only that, try to find a better example. With one of the greatest psych covers of the 60s (please check out the amazing details in close-up), this is simply a stunning, beautifully preserved copy and one for connoisseur ‘Deadheads’ and psych collectors. The record looks barely played and has best sound you will ever hear from 1969 record.

Brief Info: Pronounced OX-OH-MOX-OH-AH this was the band’s third album and now at their most experimental. This is not a commercial album and at times is very ‘out-there’ – just listen to the psych weirdness of ‘What’s Become of the Baby’, one of the best ‘stoned-out’ classics put to record. It includes one of their live favourites in 'St Stephen'. The whole album has an unsettling effect and from the outset had no hope of commercial success. The Grateful Dead were never as popular in the UK as in their native US and sales were never that impressive here hence the difficulty in finding the early albums on the original format and in top conditions, it’s near impossible. This example is simply stunning and that’s using the word correctly. The cover with its truly beautiful artwork will rarely be found better - both sides have to be seen to be fully appreciated, but I hope my pictures go some way in convincing. The record is immaculate visually and plays the same and has that strange eerie deliberate low-fi psych sound only available on the early mixes. A gem of a piece, how many early orange copies will survive like this?, usually bought by those of a certain type - rarely hi-fi buffs, most will trashed by careless handling or victims of vintage record players. Quite honestly, this copy is little short of ‘as new’ and will delight the fans and collectors of the classic late 60s era.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderately High.

Cover Grade and Format: Mint(-) a single format with front lamination. The rear has three hugh flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. This imprint is only just visible on the back as the right flipback’s size cover half the text.

Lamination & Front: Like WOW man! - this is jaw-drop gorgeous. One of the greatest front covers ever. The richness of the wonderful artwork has to be seen under the crystal clear, ultra shiny laminate that has no friction rubbing or dull areas – it hardly gets better than this. With just ONE very small surface edge crease only and minimal record impression, this front is world-class and as near ‘reference’ standard as any ever will be these days. Even better news: all is fully adhered with no lifting or blistering, always great news on the darker covers especially. The right edge sees the laminate end slightly short of full width and even the fine exposed strip is unchipped or worn and certainly very clean with grime-line formation. Truly a beautiful sight, I simply cannot stop looking at it myself.

Cover Back: The back is of similar quality again: unlaminated and black and white, it has the potential to show ever mark and blemish time or bad storage has to offer it. This has just the mildest traces of any grubbiness with no ringwear or rubbing, the hippiesque drawing is again in breathtaking condition and the details looks fantastic, could not resist taking a close-up shot to try and show this. The only blemish probably just worthy of note is the top right corner has a mild ‘press’, possibly in manufacture, the spine ends are tapered or a mild knock in the past - it’s minimal and tiny anyway but I felt obliged to mention. All three flipbacks are in remarkable condition as well and totally undamaged or worn. Still very white with the ends clean with no grime-line formation and barely a burr trace to be seen. All fully adhered and neat and even the laminate here has real gloss and crystal clear again with no yellowing. Overall, a supreme example for both sides and defying its forty year age.

Top Edge: Unworn.

Bottom Edge: Unworn, both ultra smooth to the fingertip with no grazing or scuffs, fully laminate with no peeling.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp, but not the crispest cuts in manufacture, with no wear or feathering. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Practically perfect again: Solid, straight, uncompressed with tapered ends in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All look fantastic with lovely neat and pointed shape retained. It the top left has taken a minor knock in the past, the corner has not been affected apart, maybe, from a small laminate lift on the laminate.

Cover Summary: A magnificent all round example of this very colourful late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult, if not near impossible to find much better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) and how many ‘Dead’ albums will ever show like this? A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and only the merest few traces of any surface marks under light. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful psych album plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is quite unusual with a strange mix which I guess was quite deliberate, it will never be heard better than this. Any surface sounds barely ever register and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing and this really does have some very quiet moments. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful, spaced-out record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
