On Independence Day in 1971, the Fillmore West closed its doors, leaving a Bay Area landmark in its wake. During the closing week, proprietor Bill "Uncle Bobo" Graham selected a few of his favorite artists to help him send the venerable venue out in style. The festivities were documented on film and tape, the results of which were issued the following year as both a full-length cinematic feature film and three-LP box set. The latter also featuring a bonus 7" record containing a few "Words with Bill Graham." Initial pressings also came packaged with an original "closing week" poster, a ticket from one of the hundreds of legendary shows held in the Fillmore between November 6, 1965, and July 4, 1971, as well as a commemorative liner notes booklet, which, among other things, included a complete list of every show held at the venue. Musically, the discs feature a who's who of rock music circa 1971, most -- if not all -- of whom began their collective journeys in the Bay Area music scene at the time. The Grateful Dead ("Casey Jones" and "Johnny B. Goode"), Quicksilver Messenger Service" ("Fresh Air" and "Mojo"), and Santana ("Incident at Neshabur" and "In a Silent Way") all make strong showings. As do some of the lesser-known artists, such as Malo ("Pana") and Lamb ("Hello Friends"). Last Days of the Fillmore includes some amazing performances from It's a Beautiful Day ("White Bird"), as well as the stunningly powerful "Baby's Calling Me Home" by Boz Scaggs -- no doubt an homage to his stint with the Steve Miller Band -- plus a definitive version of "Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burnin'" from Hot Tuna -- who are the only representatives from the Jefferson Airplane, perhaps the one San Francisco band that is most conspicuously absent from the proceedings. The "Words with Bill Graham" interview allows Graham to personally express his thanks to the people who made the Fillmore such a success and to give some insight into the changing dynamics [read: money and drugs] that so radically altered his ability to adequately provide both artists and attendees with the same high-quality performances and venue for a reasonable price.
(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY LINDSAY PLANER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
What else needs to be said? This is one of the pivotal albums in the history of the 1960s West Coast Psychedelia. Although technically recorded in 1971 and released in 1972, this is a prime-time slab of vintage psychedelia, replete with 'magma' light show and related sound- and visual effects. The triple album is one of the critical pieces in understanding the role Billy Grahan and Fillmore East played in the development of the contemporary American music. The set includes the cream of the crop of the great American Bands, unleashing their rapid fire in the soon-to-be-closed Fillmore auditorium. Miss it now, and weep later. · CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. Minor scuff noted on Billy Graham interview disc; the three LPs are in impeccable condition, probably not played more than once or twice.
(b) This box set is COMPLETE and comes with with ALL original extras (the booklet; the poster; the bonus 45 rpm EP and the concert stub
(c) The records come in poly-lined inner sleeves, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!
(d) The records are pressed on a RELATIVELY thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type), vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER ( ¾-INCH THICK CARDBOARD BOX)
THE BOX IS NICE -- ABOUT VERY GOOD++
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the box:
- The box has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3
- The box has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- The box shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)
- The box has A few minor grease-like stains on the front panel (nothing significant) (less than 2 square inches, total)
- Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)
- The box has two corner on the spine of the lid (upper part) split and delicately repaired (taped)
- The box has one corner slightly worn
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE BOX
