The Greenhornes release their first album of new material since 2002, the title **** stands for ‘four stars’ not an expletive, and is on Jack White’s Third Man Records.
The band consisting Craig Fox (vocals & guitar), Jack Lawrence (bass & vocals), Patrick Keeler (drums) – also, variously members of The Raconteurs and the Dead Weather- have been producing the highest quality rock n roll for well over a decade.
Having been weened on British r&b and rock from the sixties onwards those influences are bound to come out somewhere on this new collection of songs, the bands fourth album.
There is some excellent stuff on this album and The Greenhornes play it straight up with no fancy gimmicks just great playing, cleverly structured songs and a passion for what they do.
Opening with the dark pop of Saying Goodbye, a fantastic introduction to the album with a brilliant r&b riff and Beatle-esque vocals, while you almost expect a version of Can’t Explain from the opening chords on the second track Underestimator.
Better Off Without It is a more soulful effort, resplendent with haunting organ that leads into the heavier psychedelia of the next track Cave Drawings.
I could go on, this is an excellent album that just seems to grow and grow, from mild interest to constantly being played on my mp3 player, **** will get under your skin as it has mine, given half a chance.
Listening to **** is like listening to twelve tracks that represent pop and rock music from the last four decades, sounds that define an era in a form that you are hearing for the first time.
