There's something wonderfully old fashioned about "Actus Reus", the first collaborative set from beat-maker Dixon Hill and veteran Detroit rapper (and sometime Madlib/J Dilla collaborator) Guilty Simpson. Hill's beats are superb, and draw upon samples collected over a lifetime, hundreds of hours of courtroom audio recordings. They're largely dusty, laidback and jazzy, with a fuzzy flavour that recalls the "golden era" of hip-hop in the late 80s and early '90s. You can wallow in those beats on side B; on the A-side, Simpson has his say over the top, delivering thoughtful raps in his distinctive style that muse on various aspects of black American life. In a word: essential.
