The one and only release on Nimbus for reedsman Gary Bias, this 1981 offering is a delight from start to finish, typified by long sax flourishes and shimmering hi-hats as in the spiritual opener ‘Asiki’. The more abstract ‘Dear Violet’ is an exercise in stretching out the melody as far as it will go while the hypnotic ‘Arthur’s Vamp’ sees each member enjoying the spotlight with some glistening vibes work adding a sparkle to the track. ‘East 101’ has a waltz feel emerging from the clatter of sax against drums while ‘As Children Play’ is more playful with several strands of melody parting and eventually merging in a crescendo graced by Bias’ flute.
