ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This outstanding LP – a superb collector's copy – from Philips (802 805 LY, Dutch pressing, red/silver label – ED1, lux cloth spine glossy double-gatefold edition, stereo, promo copy) features the great Maurice Gendron with composer/pianist Jean Francaix in a truly sublime rendition of Schubert's Sonata for Cello and Piano in A minor D. 821 "Arpeggione", recorded at Eindhoven, Wapen van Eindhoven, The Netherlands, on 26 November 1966, the disc filled out with Beethoven's 3 sets of Variations for Cello and Piano.
The exact discographic contents are as follows:
Side 1:
Schubert: Sonate für Arpeggione und Klavier a-moll, D.821
Beethoven: 12 Variationen über "Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen" (aus Mozarts "Zauberflöte", op. 66)
Side 2:
7 Variationen über "Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen" (aus Mozarts "Zauberflöte")
12 Variationen über "Tochter Zion" (aus Händels Oratorium "Judas Makkabäus")
The composer Ned Rorem said of Gendron: "He was the most gifted, the most difficult, the most spiritual human being I ever met." He was certainly one of the last century's great cellists and these remarkable Beethoven performances remain discographic landmarks.
Incidentally, the striking cover art was executed by Max Möller (photographed by Arjé Plas). There are excellent liner notes (uncredited), provided in both German and French.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the gatefold jacket is near-MINT. The only flaws to speak of concerns some slight bumping at corners, but that is all. Otherwise the album is without defect – there are no seamsplits, owners' markings, bends, or even edgewear. Indeed, jacket remains solid, bright, glossy, and extremely attractive – overall, this rates as a lovely collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really this is a very fine copy and playback is truly superb. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a very fine collector's copy.
