Cover: ex Ultra-rare lp of obscure works for the wonderful Trautonium early electronic keyboard instrument, performed here by its main proponent, Oskar Sala, awash in crazy synthetic harmonics and oceans of reverberation. This is one of the few remaining Sala recordings that has never been reissued, and even when backed by a classical orchestra as on these two tracks, his instrument sounds as futuristic as ever contrasted against Genzmer's fairly typical modern tonalities. The Trautonium was invented in 1930 by Freidrich Trautwein and manufactured by Telefunken, and was further developed by Sala in 1952 with the addition of polyphonic capability; it attained a distinctive sound quality by means of subtractive synthesis, allowing a precise control of subharmonic frequencies. The performer plays the instrument by pressing wires against metal contact rails, adjusting knob- and pedal-operated filters, and controlling a "percussion unit". Here the earlier Konzert is for the original monophonic Trautonium, and the later piece uses the polyphonic Mixtur-Trautonium; both recordings are from live radio broadcasts made during the 1950s. Featuring the Bremer Philharmonisches Staatsorchester conducted by Siegfried Goslich and the Sinfonie-Orchester des Suddeutschen Rundfunks Stuttgart conducted by Hans Muller-Kray.

Genzmer was a student of Paul Hindemith. Sala studied composition under Hindemith, worked with Trautwein to develop the Trautonium, created the soundtrack to Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, and worked with Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk. Other composers who wrote for the Trautonium were Paul Hindemith (who also learned to play the instrument), Paul Höffer, Harald Genzmer, and Julius Weismann.
