This handsome and very rare LP from Deutsch Grammophon (419 174-1, German pressing, white circle label, DDD stereo) features Emil Gilels’ transcendent accounts of Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas No. 30 in E Major Op. 109* and No. 31 in A-flat Major Op. 110, both recorded in the rich acoustics of Jesus Christus-Kirche, Berlin in August* and September 1985.

Gilels brings a lifetime’s wisdom and experience to these exalted readings, performances which linger in the mind long after the music has stopped.

These were his very last commercial recordings before his untimely death less than a month later in October 1985. This LP is the rarest of Gilel’s Beethoven LPs for DG.

The head of production for this album was Hanno Rinke,  the recording supervisor Werner Mayer, and the balance engineer Klaus Scheibe.

Incidentally, the cover photo of Gilels was taken by Susesch Bayat, Berlin. There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket – provided in English, German, French, and Italian – by Dr. Hartmut Fladt.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. This was a promo copy and there is a stamp, consisting of needle-like holes, at the lower-right corner. There is also a light scuff along the top portion of the front panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP is near-MINT and playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
