ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful LP from Vox (PL 9020, English pressing pressing, black/gold microgroove pressing, laminated glossy jacket, mono – no stereo edition exists) features Ivry Gitlis in a marvelous pairing of Berg's Violin Concerto "To the Memory of an Angel" and the Chamber Concerto for Violin, Piano, and 13 Wind Instruments, both recorded in Vienna in 1954.
In the former Gitlis is accompanied by conductor William Strickland and the Pro Musica Symphony, Vienna. In the latter, Gitlis is joined by pianist Charlotte Zelka and the Pro Musica Wind Instrument Group, Vienna under the direction of conductor Harold Byrns.
Wrote the eminent critic Rob Cowan of Gitlis in the November 1993 issue of The Gramophone: "Ivry Gitlis is a bigger name on the Continent than here, but his versatility (he's also a dab hand at jazz), virtuosity and interpretative boldness mark him out as totally unique. Gitlis is a violinist's violinist; talk to any prominent fiddler (including Kennedy) about 'the greats' and he or she will mention Gitlis in the same breath as Oistrakh, Kogan, Huberman, even Heifetz."
And wrote the superlative critic Jonathan Woolf for MusicWeb-International.com: "Sometimes in the Berg Concerto one feels that the engineers have slightly skewed the balance with the result that orchestral detail is skimped in favour of solo detailing. But never mind. This is playing of devoted passion. It resonates and lives. There are, of course, plenty of better recordings and indeed more precise and pretty performances. No one is claiming this as an exemplar of those virtues. But Gitlis plays with memorable and indeed heroic drama. William Strickland is the conductor. Gitlis is a great elucidator. He plays music as if he means it, believes in every ounce of it, and is unprepared to produce half-hearted performances, or go through the motions. Whether he does, in reality, have a template for a particular work seems unlikely. He would doubtless find the idea abhorrent."
Vox is too often regarded as a budget label, one offering thrift-edition performances to a wide audience, rather than “A” List recordings to the cognoscenti. However, their catalog boasted any number of remarkable artists, Gitlis and Horenstein certainly among them. The Bartok Concerto in particular is imbued with a dark, brooding atmosphere that is very compelling.
Incidentally, the amazing cover art is by Elliott Gilbert. The liner notes are by John S. Weissmann.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD++. There is minor bumping/wear at corners, as well as slight fraying/detachment of the laminate at the lower edge. However, there are no seamsplits, owners' markings, or bends, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and very attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD. The surfaces are not always CD silent (there is some surface noise), but in general the playback is quite fine – there is great presence to the sound and to Gitlis' playing. This is not a MINT or near-MINT copy and those requiring such are advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is a fine collector's copy.
