Excellent and rare album of avant garde works, each of which involve electronics in either live processing or prerecorded tape. Mumma's piece is an awesome swirl of noise recorded from a live electronic sound installation with circuitry designed by the composer and triggered by audience members as well as samples from radio. Ussachevsky's Conflict consists of abstract electronic sounds meant to illustrate a battle between gods based around an epic ancient Babylonian creation myth; it incorporates computer-derived sound patterns, tape-manipulated instruments, and synthesizers. Chadabe's Echoes has Jan Williams playing percussion processed in realtime by an "automated electronic system" called Daisy invented by the composer. McMillan's musique concrete pieces feature the tape-manipulated sounds of whales and unusual instruments and were realized at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. Ain's piece features violinist Yoko Matsua. Highly recommended!

artist info from album notes etc.:
Mumma worked with Merce Cunningham, Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith, Marcel Duchamp, and Jasper Johns, and was a member of the Sonic Arts Union, a composers' collective that included David Behrman, Alvin Lucier and Robert Ashley. McMillan was a pupil of Otto Luening and Edgard Varese (for whom she provided technical assistance in his electronic works) and worked for RCA and Columbia as a music editor. Ussachevsky was born a Russian-Manchurian prince but fled to the US after the communist revolution; he began experimenting with as the tape recorder a compositional tool in the early 1950s, was influenced by Edgard Varese and Roger Sessions, taught Charles Wuorinen and Ilhan Mimaroglu, and co-founded the Columbia Princeton Electronic Music Center where he pioneered electronic music along with Otto Luening, Bulent Arel, Milton Babbitt, and Mario Davidovsky and influenced contemporaries like John Cage, Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, Bernard Parmegiani, Tod Dockstader, Earle Brown, Jon Appleton, Dick Raaijmakers, Rune Lindblad, Karlheinz Stockhausen, etc. Chadabe is known for his interactive computer music systems; he studied under Elliott Carter, founded the Electronic Music Studio at the State University Of New York at Albany, founded and serves as president of the Electronic Music Foundation, and worked with Jan Williams. Ain studied under Hall Overton, Stefan Wolpe, and Miriam Gideon.
