Dick's Pick's Vol. 5: Oakland Auditorium Arena December 26, 1979
The Grateful Dead released an official live concert series called Dick's Picks. These shows have come to be known as some of the best Grateful Dead shows of all time. The Dick's Picks series, which started in 1993, was named for Grateful Dead tape vault archivist Dick Latvala, who selected his favorite shows with the band's approval and oversaw production of the albums. After Latvala's death in 1999, David Lemieux became the Dead's tape archivist and took over responsibility for the Dick's Picks releases. Today this series is being released on vinyl for the first time by Brookvale Records.
Dick's Picks Volume 5 marks two important firsts for the preeminent live album series from The Grateful Dead. It is the first Dick's Picks to contain a complete Dead show in its entirety, and the first to feature Brent Mydland on keyboards. The three-hour concert is a remarkable snapshot of the Dead's live output at the end of their most prolific decade. Originally released in 1996 on CD, Volume 5 is now released as part of Brookvale Records' critically-acclaimed Dick's Picks Vinyl Series.
This stunning 5LP set is pressed on 180g audiophile-grade black vinyl and limited to only 1500 copies worldwide. Each 12" x 12" box set is individually hand-numbered and features artwork, packaging, and mastering all approved by the band. As was the case with the two preceding volumes, Dick's Picks Volume 5 has been painstakingly remastered for vinyl from the original tapes by longtime Bay-area engineer Jeffrey Norman. This classic recording has absolutely never sounded better.
"Though there are some nice moments in the first set of this full-length concert, among them a particularly vociferous vocal by Bob Weir on "Looks Like Rain" and a performance of "Alabama Getaway" that preceded its appearance on the Go To Heaven album by four months, the reason Dead tape archivist Dick Latvala picked this show for release obviously comes in the second set. It is, in a sense, one long medley based on "Uncle John's Band" (making its first appearance in a Dead concert in more than two years), which opens the proceedings and closes them nearly two hours later. In between, there is another two-plus-year revival of "Brokedown Palace" and a lot of interesting jamming." - William Ruhlmann, Allmusic.com
"Mixing and mastering engineer Jeffrey Norman has been a part of the Grateful Dead world on and off for more than 25 years now. Since his first project with the band — editing tracks for Dead Set back in 1980 — he’s been involved in dozens of projects in various capacities: He’s mastered all but the first selection in the Dick’s Picks series; he’s mixed nearly all of the group’s archival releases from multitrack tapes since 2000, including such multi-disc masterpieces as Ladies and Gentlemen…The Grateful Dead (from Fillmore East ’71), Rockin’ the Rhein, Steppin’ Out (both culled from Europe ’72 shows), the 10-CD Fillmore West box (from winter ’69), the 5-CD Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack (fall ’74), the recent Live at the Cow Palace New Year’s 1976, and many more. From 1995 until 2006, Norman worked day-in and day-out at the Dead’s now-defunct studio at Bel Marin Keys in Novato, Marin County; before that he did sporadic work for the Dead, mostly out of their legendary Club Front studio in San Rafael, all the while maintaining a busy career as an independent engineer active in many Bay Area studios." - dead.net
