Hank Mobley is cool. So is the Blue Note 1500 series. There's something about those early Blue Note recordings of the mid-1950s. They've got just a little bit of edge, a little more "rawness" to them than the slicker sounding 4000 series of later on--almost like everything was not as rehearsed and therefore the musicians are slightly on guard and maybe slighly more adventurous. I don't know. Anyway, so far I've not heard a Mobley recording I haven't liked. And Blue Note in the 1500 series excelled in the cover art department. Grab this one while it is still out there. The LP sounds great.

·      CONDITION:

·      RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 2 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)         A note about the condition of this record: as you can see,  the condition of this album is not mint or near mint; however, we will never stop marveling at how these old Blue Note records, despite their wear STILL manage to play almost two levels above their visual grade. Simply put: the record plays much better than it looks. This record WAS play-graded.

(c)         The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings)

(d)         The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(e)         The record has an "ear" symbol (a pretzel-like engravure about 1/4-inch/6mm long) in the trail-off vinyl, which on SOME  jazz and blues labels (such as Blue Note; Folkways; Period, etc…) is associated with very early or first pressings). The 'ear' symbol is actually a letter 'P' in italic script, denoting a pressing made by Plastilite Corporation’s pressing plant.

(f)          Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(g)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·      COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-       Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-       Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there.

-       The laminated cover has a slight loss (flaking) of lamination along the opening edge (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers; lamination is just beginning to peel-off along the opening edge; however, since the underlying layer of the cover is ALSO laminated, the peeled-off spots are only a minor visual distraction

-       Back cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker (less than ¼ square inch in size)

-       Cover has a minor wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel

-       Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-       Cover shows some yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the bottom seam (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
