Artist: HAROLD LAND
Title: “Harold in the Land of Jazz”
Label: CONTEMPORARY ~ C-3550. Stereo pressing on medium weight vinyl. Label is yellow with black text, with deep groove. Matrix numbers are machine stamped in the runout groove.
Year: 1958.

Condition:
DISC: Vinyl is gorgeous NM-, a beauty! The playing surface is immaculate, except a few light scuffs. Disc has a high luster, played a small number of times and handled with care. Plays beautifully with superb fidelity. Labels are clean and pristine.
JACKET: Jacket is EXCELLENT with nice bright artwork. Bottom right corner has some creasing. Seams, spine, and surfaces are excellent. A bit of minor wear along bottom seam. Reverse has name written neatly at upper left corner; otherwise is clean and white. Overall a very fine jacket.

“Other than four titles from 1949, [this LP] has tenor saxophonist Harold Land's first sessions as a leader. Teamed up on the West Coast with trumpeter Rolf Ericson, pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Frank Butler, Land shows that hard bop was very much alive in Los Angeles in the late '50s. His tone is cooler and softer than it would become later on, but it was already pretty distinctive. Land performs three of his swinging originals, the original version of Perkins' "Grooveyard" (which became a minor standard), an obscurity by Elmo Hope, and the standards "Speak Low" and "You Don't Know What Love Is." Fine straight-ahead music.”
