Rare American avant garde. This boxed set in the CBS Masterworks series (Cat. No. 192 30576) contains 3 stereo LPs (AL 30577/78 & XSM 154516); the first recording of Harry Partch’s "Delusions of the Fury" (2 discs) and a bonus record in which the composer introduces and comments on the 27 unique instruments built by him during his lifetime of creating his own musical universe. There is also an 8-page illustrated booklet.
Delusions of Fury is a ritual of dream and delusion, a staged production based on a Japanese folk-tale, composed between 1930 and 1969, played by an ensemble of unique instruments conducted by Danlee Mitchell under the composer’s supervision. It’s a complex rhythmic score with no libretto, all action is by dance or mime, 4-parts that proceed for 90-mintes without interruption; punctuated in places with eerie wordless singing, by soloists and chorus. The instruments are various string, keyboard, percussion, hand and wind instruments, basically derived from a number of countries, all are illustrated in the leaflet with dates of creation. The 3 discs are in clean, shiny condition. There are some very light surface marks but the only audible defect is 4 faint ticks on side 1 of the Delusion. The box front has become detached (it was aging and only secured by thin paper). 1 corner is split and the paper front is rubbed in several places. Details & synopsis of the Delusion are pasted inside the box front and rear covers; and the Instrument’s booklet is in excellent condition.
