Gypsy Jazz? Third Stream? World Music? EDDIE SOUTH & HIS INTERNATIONAL ORCHESTRA had been there and done that DECADES before anyone coined or even thought of these musical categories. South completed his musical training in Europe under the renowned Hungarian violinist Joseph Szigetti (take his Columbia set of the Beethoven Violin Concerto for a spin sometime). But the world wasn't yet ready for a Black concert violinist in 1927, so Eddie, like so many dark-skinned others, turned to jazz, and MAN, could he ever play HOT! He also retained his love of classical and exotic music. The result was the International Orchestra.
ON these sides, recorded in Chicago in 1931, South treats us to: "HEJRE KATI (Hungarian Dance)" and "MARCHETA (A Love Song of Old Mexico)," utterly revising our notions of Gypsy and Mariachi music respectively, treating them reverently at first, exploding into hot jazz halfway through.
The International Orchestra was: EDDIE SOUTH (violin and vocals), CLIFFORD KING (clarinet), ANTONIA SPAULDING (piano), EVERETT BARKSDALE (guitar and banjo), that versatile washboard guy JIMMY BERTRAND (drums and bells), and someone named "NINO" on added vocals. What an intriguing bunch!
This original 1931 "Scroll" Victor 22847 is in splendid EE+ condition.
