Description
This is a Stereo copy of the 1962 first pressing of Herbie Hancock's Takin' Off on Blue Note BST 84109, featuring Dexter Gordon. Pre-Liberty pressing, with "Van Gelder" and "Stereo" stamps in the runoffs, as well as the prized "ear" on both sides. This copy has some scuffs and marks, but it plays so beautifully. There is a touch of noise at the beginning of both sides that is only barely audible when the music starts, and it fades to almost nothing within the first few seconds. The rest of the time there is barely anything of it. You can sometimes hear a faint crackle between tracks, but when the music is playing there is barely any of it to be heard. Even on the quiet last tune (Alone and I) there is only tiny faint noise heard only in a couple of moments. The noise sort of creeps in a touch more as the tune ends, but really not bad. These deep-groove records always sound so much better than they look. The whole record plays about VG+/E-, I would say, and is absolutely stunning to hear on the original stereo vinyl. I A-B-ed it with a later reissue and it is like a different album altogether. This is the best way to hear this classic. The cover is in beautiful condition as well, with no splits or creases, except a very small and light one at the bottom left corner. A little aging with a few spots and a strip of doscoloration along the opening (see photo) but really a great cover. Unusual for this album.
