Label/Format: Liberty – Black format with matt finish and a very gently, subtle textured surface. This was NOT issued on the blue label missing the cut by only days.

Label Conditions: Two superb labels: very clean, fresh examples with only a couple of small, light and faint spindle marks each side. This appears hardly played with beautifully clean playing surfaces and sound. Any handling traces or marks to the highly revealing black surfaces are very faint indeed, near impossible to avoid totally, unless the owner wore gloves, and let’s be honest, that is never going to happen.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 127 grams. Around average.

Rarity: Scarce in terms of units sold. But rare in such condition. The cover is immensely thin, soft, unprotected and textured. Being so dark as well, few have any chance of avoid penetraing ringwear and major creasing. Up there with the most delicate sleeves of the time, finding one grading anything like excellent is some achievement. Well this one is a beauty with the least wear I have possibly ever seen. These when seen are often caked in black pen to try and hide/obscure major rubbing, sticker tears and damage. I feel sure this has avoided such treatment – there is a small round price sticker mark near the top front left corner, but this looks like gentle residue to me with minimal traces of any surface ink issue. It shows very little anyway, and if any enhancement was made by the original owner, it is minimal and expertly done, it simply appears as a small dull mostly seen under angled light. This cover when seen this devoid of main-area wear is a thing of genuine beauty, and few available ones will better this significantly. High Tide is an elusive album for sure.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Within the field of UK progressive rock there can be few better kept secrets than the magificent High Tide. A band that made just two albums and both are astonishingly brilliant. A four piece heavy band that totally blew me away when I first heard them. A follow up to Sea Shanties – but hardly ‘Sea Shanties’, blistering electric guitar and violin with tons of wah-wah – both are early prog nirvana. This quartet made truly inspired slightly doom laden heavy prog. Tony Hill has a Jim Morrison type voice which complements the sound of this band perfectly. Heavy guitars go head-to-head with Simon House’s electric violin with awesome results. A barrage of electric frenzy with heavy pounding rhythm, the excitement goes into overdrive. A later member of Hawkwind, this was Simon House at his best and this band should have gone on to superstardom within this field, but alas not the case. The record looks hardly played and sounds superb and the cover, put into true context, almost exceptional. If any late-60s/early 1970s prog-rock lover has not heard High Hide or needs a copy, this is essential. A great album, one to totally captivate and blow you away - what a band - what an album. This is up there with the vintage heavy classics like early Black Sabbath, Amon Duul II’s Yeti, and the early acid Hawkwind albums – maybe even better still for my money. Unleash this best kept secret now with this powerful display of dark, heavy, progressive rock - brilliant is too small a word for this one. And this a copy that could prove a significant upgrade for many.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): not perfect, but this is so hard to find this clean. A single unlaminated format with a lovely textured finished and made with VERY soft, thin card. All the recipes for heavy ringwear, rubbing and creasing. Also highly intolerant of vintage price stickers, an era of ones that once applied, they did not want to come off without taking large chunks of the cover surface with them. Collectors of my age or older will remember them with equal displeasure. Printed and made in England by The Upton Group and includes the original plain inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A beautiful piece of art, but only when seen some like near it’s best. And that is all too seldom. The best way I can think of to describe the surface, is like a very soft leather. Okay, a small, light sticker dull blemish as mentioned already near the top left corner, but this has made little impression or ‘damage’ to the surface. If there is any enhancement here, it is expertly done and shows little. Any rubbing is minor and confined purely to the corner tips or traces near the very edges (only here and there). This is NOT a cover to be held with one hand, being so thin, it will simply flop, bend and crease with certainty. So the lack of creasing, bar a few edge ultra fine hairlines is great news. But better still is the lack of ringwear or inkloss, any rim impression minimal as well. Just look in close-up of the superb graphics which are magnificently intact, fresh and clean. Overall, just the merest hint of it’s delicate disposition, but try finding this unforgiving front much better.

Cover Back: If you think the front is difficult, well the back is even more so. But look at this magnificent example. This has so little to fault with merely traces of slight rubbing on the very edges, again here-and-there. Any marks or blemsihes tiny, few and very faint. Ringwear? what ringwear?, few of these will ever avoid it, but this really has. Again, any rim impression or creasing minimal. This is my best one ever.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both edges are incredibly fine and thin, they have scant chance of avoiding some wear, even with more careful owners. This record again from the same lot I have been offering lately, which is why this is so fine. The top edge has only very fine and gentle, patchy rubbing and remains straight and unsplit. The bottom also straight and intact, slightly more patchy rubbing, mostly light with just a couple of small moderate spots. This storage edge has survived well due to being cover-protected most of it’s time.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Viewed end-on, it becomes immediately apparent just how thin this card is. But again, this is in super condition with any thickening or burring little, mild and light. No trimming or enhancements guaranteed, indeed – possibly the sticker blemish apart – I can see no evidence of any tipping-in or other cosmetic improvements at all. As already mentioned further up, I have seen a few of these caked in thick pen on edges atop of what is obvious deep rubbing even with wooliness – how obvious and stupid is that?

Spine and Text: A fragile and very thin spine and near impossible to find ‘perfect’. This has little to fault, the only blemish of note, small central area rub traces that has made the reading of the word ‘TIDE’ less easy. The spine text is incredibly fine anyway on the black surface, but most can still be seen, read and largely present. Tiny chipping around the middle part makes ‘TIDE’ harder to see with the odd character clip, but under a magnifier, the word is still largely present. Overall, this fragile spine has hardly any rubbing and remains solid, straight and unsplit. It will not prove easy to find better, many will be threadbare these days.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs with fine to very fine shape retained (arguably better considering).

Cover Summary: With the main areas of this ultra fragile, delicate and wear-prone cover looking highly impressive with little wear, I consider this a near exceptional example that should please many, if not most collectors. Finding one much better will prove more than difficult.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): only marked down from practically Mint as the one-and-only original owner put ‘High Tide’ on the back near the top entrance in very neat, small writing. A plain white unlined solid inner that has barely aged at all – the old adage of ‘clean inner, clean record’ rarely applied more. Any seam adhesive darkening tiny and light, no creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and as close to my full Mint(–) grade as it gets. This a superb example with any surface traces minuscule. The only blemish purely in manufacture with a trace of pressing ‘mottle’ (possibly impurity) as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light. This, stating the obvious’, present from day one and emiting a faint trace of surface sound for a few brief seconds, then little short of perfection thereafter. All evidence suggests a record very little played and so typical from this recent lot I have been offering. Very clean with fine shine and solidly pressed, never subjected to any worn or heavy tracking stylus abuse. This superb copy should please most-all collectors, like the cover, a record rarely seen like this.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This amazingly powerful record plays up to and most-all above its high visual grading with barely anything to fault after the very gentle (and very brief) surface sound traces at the very beginning. A minor pressing issue I doubt few would even bother to mention. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very impressive with a full dynamic range and very rich and dynamic sound. No pops or clicks were noted and this will take a vast amount of beating. The volume goes sky-high for a high percentage of this album, but as with most prog classics, there are some quiet passages too but not too many on this powerhouse title. I found this album enthralling and it will rip off the speaker cloth if played loud enough. Sonically this is amazing and volume really pushes the system to its limits. It almost makes me cringe to think what this record could have been played on all those years ago and the damage to the fragile grooves. All that wonderful electric violin and guitar fully focused with NO high frequency clipping. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this mini-classic. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and is unreservedly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
