Great set featuring probably the best ever audiophile recording of Partch's microtonal instrument creations. Partch regarded 'Delusion...' as the culmination of his investigations into 'corporeal' music-ritual-theater using his own highly individualistic 43-tone scale. This is its first recording, supervised by the composer and with Danlee Mitchell conducting the Ensemble of unique instruments. This box also contains "The Instruments of Harry Partch," a full-length bonus lp filled entirely with recordings of Partch himself speaking about and then playing solos on each of the 27 instruments he invented. This harder-to-find bonus record is just as beautiful as the other 2 lps (if not more so), and is an invaluable document in it's own right both as a resource on Partch's theories and a collection of otherworldly experimental sounds from the mind of an American genius. Also included is a high quality booklet with colorful photographs and descriptions of each instrument, a supplement to the bonus lp making this all in all a top-notch package (it's on the TAS list).
From the late 1930s onward, after living as a transient hobo, Partch developed instruments based on his own revolutionary tuning theories (considered the first in the field since Pythagoras). He composed in isolation within the musical universe he created, but he blazed the same trails as Alois Haba, Julian Carrillo, Ivan Wyschnegradsky, and Charles Ives, drew from percussive eastern music such as gamelan, American folk, Native American, and African music, Hebrew and Christian hymns, and "lumber yards and junk shops," and would become influential to experimental and microtonal composers like John Cage, Steve Reich, Lou Harrison, La Monte Young, Ben Johnston, Easley Blackwood, Glenn Branca, Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, John Eaton, James Tenney, Rhys Chatham, Tony Conrad, Henk Badings, and others from the avant garde; his instruments relate to the 'Structures Sonores' of Bernard and Francois Baschet and Jacques Lasry and the sound sculptures and homemade instruments of Harry Bertoia, Max Neuhaus, Z'ev, Donald Knaack, Paul Panhuysen, Bill Fontana, Mario Bertoncini, Bruce Nauman, Robert Rutman, etc. Check out my other auctions this week for more avant garde/experimental, early electronic/electroacoustic, jazz/improv, psych, sound art, and 20th century classical lps.
