Description
I am not a record dealer, just someone who has accumulated a large collection of vinyl in the 1970s and to a certain extent in the 1980s, and now has (sadly) to let my old 'friends' go to new homes (age and inevitable decay- me, not the records).
It is quite a wrench me having to let this one go, as it has been on my Desert Islands Discs list (along with 'Larks Tongues in Aspic') for the last 45 years. I bought it at the Virgin store at the bottom of 'The Moor' in Sheffield along with a T-shirt with the Hatfield road-sign logo on it. I had got a summer job before University so I could afford all that! I had first heard them on John Peel's show, and it was love at first hearing, quite unlike anything on the airwaves at the time. 'Canterbury' at its highest point of development. National Health were good as well, but losing some of the spontaneous charm of the Hatfields. I am beginning to sound like a Jonathan Coe novel.
I am not an expert on the grading of records, but I do know that 'Mint' and 'near-Mint' are, for all practical purposes, meaningless. Who buys a record and then never plays it? I adhere (as best I can) to the grading system used by 'Record Collectors' publications.
The gate fold cover is in Excellent condition, with only a tiny amount of separation of the lamination at the gatefold hinge. Side One has six very faint surface scratches only visible under strong illumination (paper scratches from the inner sleeve) and one abrasion near the run-out. Side Two has three faint surface scratches, one more visible scratch and a small abrasion. On playback, there is some surface noise but nothing desperately bad although the visible scratch on side 2 does give a click. Overall I would rate it as VG+ but not truly excellent. Please remember that I played these records because I loved the music; I did not buy them as future Collectors’ items or exercises in Hi-Fi navel-gazing. I always took good care of them, however, kept them in vinyl sleeves, and in cases, but even then, some wear is an inevitability.

In summary, this is a genuine 1st pressing, Cover EX, Vinyl VG+.
