ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful LP – a superb collector's copy – from Westminster (WST 14071, US pressing, black/blue band label, stereo) features the splendid pianist Barbara Hesse-Bukowska in a captivating account of Chopin's 14 Waltzes, recorded at the Mozartsaal, Vienna, circa 1959.
This recording was originally made by Polski-Nagrania as part of a complete Chopin survey issued in 1960 to mark the 150th anniversary of Chopin's birth. Hesse-Bukowska, a laureate of the Chopin Competition, was an elegant Chopinist, her playing full of light and shade, and wholly inside the composer's soundworld. Certainly, this is the finest pressing of this album.
Incidentally, the striking cover art was executed by Harry Farmlett. There are insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only, by Martin Bookspan, Director or Recorded Music at WQXR.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the album appears almost as new. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and very striking in appearance – overall, a lovely collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring CD silent surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
