Description

You are bidding on the rare LP:

The Hodges Brothers- Watermelon Hangin' On The Vine, released by Arhoolie Records (F-5001) in 1961. Original pressing! Label shows the Los Gatos, Calif. address.

*Your looking at the original pressing of the very first release on Arhoolie's "hillbilly" series. Not only that, this Hodges Brothers LP was one of the absolute first Arhoolie releases, recorded during Chris Strachwitz's first trip (1960) through the South to find and record musicians for his new label! Chris was familiar with The Hodges Brothers from the handful of 78s they released on the Trumpet label and he tracked them down to a poor, one-room shack in Bogue Chitta, MS. The music here features some glorious old-time pickin' and singin'. I would liken it to J.E. Mainer's Mountaineers, where it most certainly is old-time country music, yet it has subtle bluegrass or "proto-bluegrass" elements to it too. Strachwitz was very disappointed with the poor sales of this LP, so much so that he entirely abandoned seeking out hillbilly artists for a significant amount of time.*

The thick Vinyl is visually-graded in VG+ condition. When looked at under a bright light, the record shows a rich luster and a few, very light surface marks.

The Cover is graded in VG- condition, due to a significant 8-inch seam split on the left side that continues to a 4-inch seam split across the top. Otherwise, it shows a fair amount of edge & seam wear, some minor ring wear and some minor price tag residue. Despite these blemishes. the cover still does look quite nice.

Shipping is calculated by ebay at the actual cost for you, the consumer. I don't charge any extra fees for material or handling. Please note that my shipping costs have gone up ever so slightly, to more accurately reflect what the Post Office charges, especially with international shipping. I am making some slight adjustments with ebay's calculated shipping to more accurately reflect the actual rates. Thanks.

For combined shipping, please add $1 for each additional LP you purchase. If you buy many records from me, I can ship them all together in one box, and charge you the actual cost I pay at the post office. International customers, please keep in mind that once you reach 4 pounds (roughly 4 LPs+), 1st Class International is no longer a shipping option, and you must ship Priority or Express.

Insurance is your option as a buyer. International customers, please keep in mind that you can only insure your item if you ship Express, which can be very expensive. Please contact me if you would prefer this option.

Please take a look at my other auctions. I've got some more excellent records for you this week, mostly rare Blues, Country and Old Timey LPs. All of my listings are auctions beginning at $4.95 with no reserve, and these records are truly amazing. Thanks!

Feel free to ask me any questions you might have. Please communicate with me via ebay messages, not e-mail.
