Label/Format: London with matt, smooth surfaces, these have the original deep ring ridge as typified by early UK Decca pressings.

Label Conditions: Both in stunning condition: ultra clean, fresh and attractive with only two or three light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This classic vintage record appears hardly played with sound to match.

Rarity: Scarce, and rarer in stereo in this splendid condition. Yes a little ageing on the back cover, but at this considerable vintage, I think it has more than earned the right. The record is fantastic and appears hardly played and sounds great. Phil Spector’s ‘wall-of-sound’ production on five songs is totally unspoilt with full-on audio quality and no wear.

Brief Info: A classic album issued in the UK in late 1966, but not until 1969 in the United States. All will know the hit single title song, and five tracks were produced by the legendary Phil Spector. Ike & Tina Turner were an American husband-and-wife act and were considered one of the most dynamic of all R&B performers of the era. This a superb rarer stereo example that does the music and vocals maximum justice, it appears hardly played and will seldom be seen better. The cover front is fantastic with only gentle hints of age on the unprotected back. A small name and year (1967) is neatly written on the back in small fine pen. As nice as the cover is, the star piece is the record of course, and that will prove beyond difficult to find better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): (with a small date and name on back). A single format made with very thin and flimsy card. The front is Clarifoil laminated, this covers the folds and ends on the back via the spine edge. The back is matt and quite smooth. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace and includes the vintage Decca-style polylined inner sleeve that is date-coded 086 (August 1966).

Lamination & Front: The front is superb with fine shine and clear laminate with minimal hint of any dulling and or lifting. With such thin card, the relative lack of rim impression – gentle traces under light only – is very impressive, as is the lack of creasing. Unusually also, this lays practically flat with no bowing which for vintage Clarifoil covers is seldom seen. The famous graphic on the front still very fresh and attractive and will rarely be seen better on this rarer stereo cover.

Cover Back: A mere hint of age with a little patchy toning and gentle discolouration, but in terms of real wear, barely any. The owner put his name in fine, neat and small pen with the year-of-purchase, being 1967. Personally, when this neat, I have no personal issues with that, in fact the date simply adds to it’s history.

Top Edge: Very thin, and very unusually straight, flat and unworn with full smooth laminate coverage.

Bottom Edge: Same again, if anything, even better.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still impressively sharp with barely any wear. Any thickening or burring minuscule even as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Again impressive: solid, mostly straight with minimal bowing and any compression gentle and patchy. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, also well-centred on a fairly limited depth.

Corners: Impressively crisp and neat with better than excellent shape retained. No knocks or dinks, these thin flimsy early Decca covers are rarely seen this neat and undamaged.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. Yes a name on the back, but there is not a great deal else to really fault bar mild back ageing, and how many of these will ever be found snowy white these days? This still highly attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): only marked down a little for natural seam edge darkening that is near impossible to avoid as the adhesive browns with age. Two immaculate window circles, both totally undamaged or burred, and the polylining almost unfathomably clear and fresh. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This inner manufactured in August 1966, only a few short weeks prior to release – this detail seen in close-up.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and even seriously considered a full Mint(–) grading for what is an outstanding, hardly played record. A beautiful example with sound to match, very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed by Decca. A copy appearing hardly even run-in in vinyl terms with any surface traces minuscule and faint, even as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a supreme London/Decca record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rarer stereo copy plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
