Already a celebrated songwriter by the time of the third Impressions album, Curtis Mayfield introduced a political element to his material with the Top Ten hit "Keep on Pushing." An anthem of the burgeoning civil-rights movement (the 1964 Civil Rights Act was signed several weeks after its release), "Keep on Pushing" cemented his blend of gospel optimism with a relentless spirit of self-improvement. Though it was the only message song present, the album featured all the hallmarks of an Impressions set: impeccably smooth harmonies, the dynamic horn charts of Johnny Pate, and many more of Mayfield's irresistible songs (each with a clever spin on the usual love lyric as well as a strong sense of melody). "Talking About My Baby," the album's other big hit, was an adoring love song driven by a simple chorus and delivered by soul music's greatest harmonists. The simple ballad "I've Been Trying" was one of the most delicate and powerful the group had ever delivered, and the gospel march "Amen" became a Top Ten pop hit in early 1965 after its use in the Sidney Poitier film Lilies of the Field (for which Poitier became the first African-American to receive an Academy award). Keep on Pushing was the Impressions' first Top Ten album hit, and an excellent introduction for pop audiences just waking up to the inspirational power of soul music's finest group.

This album – in our firm view, the Greatest Impressions Album Ever - contains the gentle, warm and fuzzy, lightly swaying-and-swinging gospel-laden "Amen" (the lead track to Sidney Poitier's 1964 movie "Lilies in the Field", which is probably one of the most instantly recognized and performed tracks of all time (I know for fact that there are more than 20 versions, of which Otis Redding and Al Green versions immediately come to mind). This album almost never shows up in decent condition. To my ears, this is the last truly great Impressions’ album of the 60's (they made some more memorable recordings in the Seventies but , from this point, it will be a one long descent into syrupy production, uninspired song selection, uninventive arrangements and lukewarm, cover-based performances. If you wish to hear the Impressions at their very peak, artistic and performing, this is the one. The sound: to these ears, there should be a law prohibiting listening of Impressions' stereo records. The MONO sound simply sparkles and is light years ahead of its stereo counterparts. The sound is direct, punchy, tri-dimensional and gloriously vivid. The three guys will materialize in your living room. Promise! (well, almost, anyway)

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles in the paper slick on the front panel (nothing significant)

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.   (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)

-         Cover has a tiny, barely visible cutout hole in one of the corners

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams  (yet)

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.
