*INCREDIBLE UNSEEN* KING CRIMSON DEBUT 1ST PRESS VINYL LP (INVERTED MATRIX NOs!).
Here for sale is possibly one of the RAREST records in the world! A lovely copy of the classic 1969 debut album from King Crimson, In The Court of The Crimson King. Often hailed as the very first and one of the very best Progressive Rock albums ever made, these original UK pressings on the well sought-after Pink I label are legendary to collectors, and still 50 years on, prices continue to soar with this album always being in high demand.
However, the most important thing about this copy is that it contains BACKWARDS MATRIX NUMBERS on the vinyl, which is an important feature that was printed on NEXT-TO-NO COPIES back in 1969, making this a 1-in-a-million rarity! In my many years of collecting, I have NEVER seen a copy like this. On Discogs, the lowest price for a copy is close to £900! This is truly an incredible rarity and a piece that a collector MUST HAVE.
The Vinyl:
The vinyl has aged INCREDIBLY WELL after the last 53 years, with next-to-no crackle whatsoever, even in a quiet track like Moonchild, which plays STUNNINGLY! This is something I have genuinely never had in a copy although I have owned many over the years. This is possibly the nicest-sounding of the bunch!
And that all important matrix code reads as follows:
Side 1: ILPS 9111 A//3 1 (1 backwards) 3
Side 2: ILPS 9111 B//3 1 (3 backwards) 3
The only faults I find with the vinyl is a VERY light, non-feelable line/mark or something on the 1st track as pictured, which DOESN’T AFFECT PLAY or anything. A few other VERY, VERY mild imperfections under a bright light, but nothing to cry about. Trust me, I’ve seen some HORRIBLE copies over the years, and this is nowhere near them! Also there is a small “Joe” written on the smooth, non-textured Pink Island labels.
All in all, I would give this copy a *VG+* bordering on *EX*. A lovely slab of wax.
The Sleeve:
The EJ Day printed gatefold sleeve containing the rarer, more ‘Red picture’ on the inside, has survived decently over the years. It’s still all in one piece and in good condition. As shown in the photos, the spine isn’t fully readable and there’s plenty of side/edge wear and even a bump/crease inside the gatefold, but I have DEFINITELY SEEN WORSE!
Obviously this sleeve is not as good as the vinyl, but it’s not the sleeve that matters in this case.
To give an honest grading, I’d say it’s a lower end “VG”, but not quite a “G+”.
Also contains the original inner sleeve.
