ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and elusive LP from Columbia (33CX 1514, English EMI pressing, blue/gold label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features Igor Oistrakh’s under-rated account of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 61, recorded at Walthamstow Assembly Hall, London on 18 March 1957 with conductor Wilhelm Schüchter and The Pro Arte Orchestra.
The recordings of Oistrakh fils should never automatically be considered inferior to Oistrakh pere and Columbia’s provident decision to record him, if undoubtedly prompted by their relationship with his illustrious father, was nonetheless rewarded and Igor’s discography with the English label very much deserves systematic re-issue and renewed apprecation on disc.
For my money, David Oistrakh was a touch too reticent in this concerto, excepting his ‘live’ account with Abendroth (on a Tahra CD). Igor is more assertive here, with no want of poetry when called for – a really superb reading. Incidentally, I. Oistrakh plays Kreisler’s cadenzas.
The notes on the reverse side of the jacket, in English only, were written by Hubert Foss.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is bumping at corners, wear/chipping along the open edge of the jacket, a bit of creasing, and some tiny fraying to the laminate, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and very attractive in appearance – overall, a near-excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Surfaces are not CD silent, but in general the playback is superb. If you must have a flawless or near-MINT copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector’s copy.
