Description

‘For the first time as a band we decided to take a step back from the road and regain perspective on what Imagine Dragons is. We've always self-produced the majority of our music, with the exception to a few songs per album with Alex Da Kid. For the first time on this record we decided to leave our comfort zones and start working with a few different producers. We wanted to be more decisive instrumentally and sonically. More minimalistic, focusing on the fine details of just a few parts, rather than a wall of sound that we have chased in the past.

"Thunder" is one of the last songs we wrote for the record after writing the majority of the songs with other producers. We finally felt like we had found cohesion/direction and went back to working with Alex Da Kid for a few weeks to write something together that fit this "new" direction. It deals very plainly with my desire to be free of my youth. Middle school and High School were unfortunate times to me. I was strange. I guess i still am. But at least now I'm rich and famous.

On "Whatever It Takes" we worked with Joel Little, who did one of our favourite records, Pure Heroine by Lorde. Joel really pushed me to reach deeper lyrically. This song speaks of my anxieties and failures. My constant struggle and desire to be of worth in my own eyes.

"I Don't Know Why" was produced by Swedish producers Mattman and Robin. This is one of the first Love songs I've ever really written and is about a volatile relationship. Seems to be the only way i know to love, which is why I typically feel uncomfortable writing "love" songs.
