ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This lovely and now exceedingly rare LP from Columbia Masterworks (ML 4324, US pressing, blue/silver label, mono – no stereo edition exists) entitled “Issac Stern in Violin Favorites” features the great virtuoso – here a young firebrand – in an at turns dazzling and echanting encores album, recorded at Liederkranz Hall, New York City in December 1947 with his longtime accompanist, the splendid pianist Alexander Zakin. This is as fine a violin encores album as has ever been made and can be spoken of in the same breath as those by Heifetz, Oistrakh, Kogan, Perlman, et al. – some truly remarkable playing.

Of CBS’ 4 LP box set, ‘Isaac Stern · Life with Music’ (M442003), which included several of the above performances, the superb critic Margaret MacDonald in her review for the March 1986 issue of The Gramophone: “For in every case the violin-playing is of unsurpassable excellence, or seems so at the moment of physical hearing. Everywhere there is response to the music, whatever the demands.”
Incidentally, the charming cover art was designed by the great Alex Steinweiss. The liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket – in English only – were written by Morris Hastings.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is a bit of shelfwear to the front panel, some slight bumping at corners, and mild discoloration to the rear panel, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, or owners’ markings, and the album remains solid and attractive – overall, this rates as a very good collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD. Although the surfaces are not CD silent – there is some light surface noise – in general the playback is superb. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy, however, are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
