Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only three or four light, fine and faint spindle marks each side and no wear around the hole area. This rare record appears little played.

Rarity: Very scarce, like the majority on this most collectable label, this sold in relatively meagre numbers and never easy to find in better conditions. This is a relatively quiet album and arguably one of the most challenging in the Spiral catalogue to find that plays well.

Brief Info: The debut album from one of Vertigo’s most interesting and original bands. A trio formed from two ex-July members Jon Field and Tony Duhig. They played progressive rock with an ethnic feel to their music. They received scant promotion with predictably limited sales. They made three albums on Vertigo before leaving to join Island, where they made a further four. None of their albums are easy to find. With varying speed and volume that constantly changed, this is a massively challenging album for vinyl. Some parts are very sparse and quiet, then suddenly loud volume and crashing percussion kicks in. Finding a copy of this that plays ‘silent’ will prove beyond difficult, this copy gives a very fine account of itself with little overall unwanted. A few brief gentle ticks, but not a great deal else, and this one is very well pressed so lacking irritating crackle and contact sound that blights many copies of this. Several friends and Vertigo fans agree to this being up there with the most difficult for clean sound on this label. The cover is also prone to wear and seldom seen without often heavy rubbing and penetrating ring wear. Overall, this is a very fine copy, not perfect, I doubt if many will survive that will be, but a strong example that was a pleasure to play-grade – and so few ever are.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, uncredited, includes the swirl inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A lovely colourful front that sets the tone for this highly original album. One that does the splendid artwork near full justice and lacking the usual heavy wear most seem to have. With most of any wear on the corner tips, this should speak volume for the rest. Still clean and fresh, without rubbing to the main area and hardly creased. Any hint of sticker marks minimal and very faint with no tears, merely faint residue traces seen up close under light, and very little of. This one of the very best front on this difficult Vertigo cover I have seen for ages.

Cover Back: The back is very similar, but has a small rim arc rub near the top, hardly any creasing and like the front, no fading. An impressive and challenging back with plenty of dark ink.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Again very nice with minimal wear or blemishes. Slight hints of set-off where the purple ink rests on white card when closed, this will rarely be avoided, and here, almost as light as its likely to get. Any contact spotting tiny and minimal. So an impressive inside to match the outside faces.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and parallel with hardly any rubbing up to the ends that have a little.

Bottom Edges: Light to moderate patchy rubbing, most near the ends again. These vulnerable storage edges have fared reasonably well in context.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge (e.g. not machine cut), this neat and hardly rubbed. The back entrance edges are clean and still quite sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on. These are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with barely any compression, also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The text hardly rubbed and still easily read, any rubbing or chipping to the spine’s surface is little and light. Even the folds have avoided any real wear and remain unusually impressive and neat.

Corners: The corner tips have moderate rubbing, and as stated above, this is the most wear on this cover. The odd gentle dink, no heavy knocks, fine shape retained, a couple nearer very fine.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this uncompromising and wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): a little aged, as most often are with the usual discolouration of the seam adhesive areas. One corner crease only, both window circles perfect and the polylining clear. All edges intact with no repairs necessary. This one is date-coded 0671 (June 1971).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This, arguably the most challenging on the swirl label plays mostly up to, and the majority above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, being at times very quiet, the odd trace is practically unavoidable. A tiny few gentle ticks on the gentle song ‘Windweaver’ and odd sporadic ones here-and-there, but not many overall. There is a moderate click on the run-in groove on side one, of course, this with no affect on any music. Musically some gentle acoustic guitar, flute and light percussion – then it quickly changes to louder electric guitars and heavier percussion – a typical ‘prog-rock’ album that that respect, the musically very original and different. I consider this an impressive example and I certainly enjoyed it immensely. I will never expect ‘perfection’ or ‘silence’ on any copy of this record, if anyone indeed owns one that plays ‘digital’ quiet, well treasure it, because few will ever come close. This copy is very well pressed indeed, and very little spoilt my listening experience. A clean pressing with no tracking issues*, the occasional, very infrequent tick almost certainly the odd stubborn fragment embedded in some ultra fine grooves that even a high-quality cleaning machine has difficult in removing. Few available copies will outperform this first issue pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been quite well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Very little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended as long as the odd minor blemish here-and-there is acceptable. Not quite perfect enough for perfectionists, I think that fair to say, but I doubt if I will find a better one, this too being played on very revealing equipment.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
