Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with less than moderate spindle marks. These are fine and only really show under angled light.

Rarity: Quite rare on the original labels. These orange WB labels changed to a green format in 1971 hence this album would not have been available too long on this original format.

Brief Info: One of the most gifted singer-songwriters of his generation and this was his second album and first for Warner. Eleven lovely songs sung in his gentle style with a host a fine backing musicians, this includes one of his most famous and early singles in ‘Fire and Rain’ that tells the story of his first 20 years (often very troubled) in three minutes. Nice copy too with a record that plays superbly with little unwanted and a nice cover too. A cover more often seen with vast amounts of ringwear especially so on the early examples with the heavier orange labelled record inside. A fairly successful album, peaking at No 7 in the UK but most of these I have seen are on the green label format or even later, I have seldom seen a much better one of these as an original.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an single unlaminated format with matt surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Cover Front: Dark with strong coloured artwork that has not faded or aged to any real degree. Any rubbing is very slight as are marks and creases of which few even show with normal viewing. The lack of ringwear is a huge bonus and any light rubbing is confined to the very edges and corner tips. A vulnerable cover and this has withstood the record and time well.

Cover Back: Pretty much the same again: light surface marks, odd tiny chip and fine edge hairline creases, few show with normal viewing.

Top Edge: Light to moderate, patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edge: Similar but more moderate in the centre.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with minimal wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: A super spine: solid, straight with barely any compression and ALL text is present with no wear at all, worthy of emphasising this, as so many are seen with the text eroded completely.

Corners: All corners have rubbed but fine shape.

Cover Summary: A splendid all-round example of this wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find substantially better, especially one including the original catalogue number – beware of substitutions that have the K- prefix. This attractive item should please many collectors but not the perfectionists of course.

The Inner: EXELLENT: a heavy duty polylined white inner that is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. The lining is solid and ultra clear as seen through two near pristine window circles. A little toning or darkening of the seam glue and all edges unsplit with minimal creasing. This has the WS 1843 number on the top right corner.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy certainly played a few times with a few light surface marks and ultra fine hairlines seen under light. One tiny groove mark emits a two rev sound, the only blemish I noted on the whole album. This blemish lasting a fraction of a second only. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely vintage record plays even above it’s strong visual grading with practically nothing to fault bar the aforementioned ultra brief ‘clicks’ from the tiny mark. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with fine detail and strong sound. Well produced and in-the-room quality fidelity. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and overall, an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly delicate album. The minor surface marks are ignored and all the sound is focused and precise. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – this really is a classic album from a man at the height of his powers. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better on the elusive original format, one I can strongly recommend.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
